Is quick time pro with a G4 the best and cheapest way to capture from the HVX?

This is getting very expensive and I need to cut costs where I can, but still have good equipment for the film. I'm getting a couple of G4 power books (Old/new from MacMall) with 1.65g processors and 1.5g of ram to record from the HVX to a raid HD setup and I was wondering if anyone has any info on using Quick time 7 pro as the capture utility. I have FCP and a Quad G5 to edit with, but I can only put FCP on the G5. FCE is too expensive to buy for the laptops at this point, as I need to have enough money for new tripods, etc and to pay the cast and crew this summer during the shoot. I called apple tech support but they couldn't answer the question and suggested I post the question here.

I got a reply from Barry on DV info net and He said that no one knows yet, so thats where we are right now. The Apple Tech said that I can load my copy of FCP studio on all three machines, but I can't go on line with more than one machine or it will be detected and I'll have Steven Jobs after me for more money. I guess like Gates he dosn't have enough of my money yet.

Well after more research it turns out that at this time only FCP will capture from the camera, not even FCE will work for 1080i 24p. And quicktime pro will not work at this time. Hopefully that will change but who knows.

Well then there's a good solution. Did you plan on going online with the laptops? If not, easy fixed.

Thanks for finding that out. I was having very similar issues and this solution works perfectly for me.

What does that mean about going on line & being detected?
If you put a legit copy of FCP on your laptop and your tower, is that illegal?
If not do you have to be online doing something related to FCP or are they scanning your machine all the time?

Do you have to have both machines running at the same time online to be "detected".

Frankly thousands of people run bootlegged versions of FCP & go online and I've never heard of one of them being busted.
Are you sure this is a real issue.

If you have the same copy of FCP installed on two machines that are connected to the same network, you can only run FCP on one machine at a time. Here's the part that really pisses me off though. You can't run any other Pro Apps on other machines either. You can't run your FCP on one machine with DVDSP on another at the same time if the machines are connected. This flaw in proteching their lisences needs to go.

Steve Jobs needs to announce at the next Apple get together that he has upgraded QuickTime pro to capture DVCPRO HD in 24p and all will be well. After he calls it pro, it ought to live up to the name and do DVCPRO. Hey it will be win-win for him and us if he does it, we Indie flick makers get a helping hand and we end up using his software and hardware. In the mean time there is always plan B.

Hey Steve, you can send me my bonus for this idea, your pal, David
