Is prores LT still the choice when after effects is involved...

I know there has been a lot of discussion on the subject of prores codecs and which is best to edit in but i keep getting the same answers; "Prores LT is fine in most cases". well what about in this case:

Project: Music promo intended for MTV
edit: final cut pro, 10bit/high procession YUV
workflow: multilayered effects in fcp AND sent to after effects for composition and effects then back to final cut pro for a final render out

So in my circumstance where i will be round tripping to external programs and doing heavy color grading is prores LT still the right choice or does prores HQ now start to take dominance?

thanks guys

+1 for any info on this question. I'm a new 5DM2 user and I edit mostly in AfterEffects. LT or just plain ProRes. (I'm guessing HQ is overkill)

Hi,
In my computer (Mac Pro - 2x2.66 - 4GB) AE runs really slow rendering Prores files.
I convert H264 files from a 7D to Prores, edit on FC and export it through FCToAE application to AE for color correction and effects.
I'm aware that it's a pretty common workflow but for me it's becoming a real pain. It's impossible to work this way.
The duration of the video is 1min 30s and the size is 1920x1080 24p.
Any of you has experienced the same or has any tip to solve it??
I'm kind of new in AE.
Thank you!

I'd go with Pro Res HQ. It's a broadcast grade codec. I've used it for Discovery Channel Doc's and it's passed all QC. Do a test and make sure your hard drives can handle the higher data rate.

One thing I've noticed when exporting video from AE to ProRes that was imported in ProRes is that to get perfect color matching with the original footage (IE if 1 second of a 10 second shot needs comping and you just wanna work on the 1 sec and reintegrate in your NLE and don't want to notice a jump) you need to set your workspace to 16bit, and render out with "Trillions of Colors." Done many tests and this seems to yield the best results.

You could try exporting to an image sequence...that might go faster, I think there is a way to set that up to take full advantage of both your processors, not sure on that though. The file sizes are gonna be really big though. You can then convert the image sequence to ProRes with quicktime pro. Chances are though that it's just going slow because of the effects, not the codec.

I would just use ProRes 422. I was using LT for awhile but really why risk it? Storage is cheap and ProRes doesn't take up much more space. I would say HQ is overkill for the 5D though.
