Is Pixabay safe to use? (free stock site)

I noticed that there's a lot of high-quality video content on this site, like the level you normally pay for. Also some dodgy uploaders like "Vimeo Free Videos" and stuff.

Here's my question; What's my (the users) responsibility when it comes to the legal stuff? Even if I'm downloading somethat that is supposedly free, am I still to research the video(s)? Who uploaded them, if it seems likely that they are the real authors, etc?

Or could I just say... "well, you know, I found it on this free stock site, so it's not my problem..." in court? Some of the stuff on Pixabay is so good that I would totally consider putting it in commercial works and movies.

Well, I'm currently working with an entertainment attorney regarding clips from "public domain" sites, and I'm pretty sure what he would say- you are responsible for the content you use regardless of where you got it from. Any stock site should have a signed release from the author of content before they post it for download , but how many actually do? Chances are any site offering quality free content stole it. Which means if the original shooter found it in your project, they would have grounds for a big time lawsuit. Buy your footage from reputable sites only.

That’s too bad. I’d always assumed all the material on sites like ( the former) stock xchange was user-submitted (‘cause most of it wasn’t very good)
