Is Panny Still Coming Out With That Super-8 Lookin' HD Cam?

I remember a prototype from last year, that included most of the features of the HVX200, I guess sans the DV transport, looked like a Super 8 camera, and I think had a lower approximate base price than the HVX if I remember correctly. Is this camera still going to come out, or has it been assimilated into the HVX release? Also, what, outside of the lack of DV (it ONLY had P2), what is this camera lacking in comparison to the HVX? Anyone know when the approximate date of delivery would be on that camera, that is, IF it is to be delivered? Jan? Jarred? Anyone?

Bummer. That would have been cool....Oh, well. Can't complain too much though, what with the HVX in the wings and all....

I took a good look at the HVX at NAB and was told it was a mock-up as well.

Things that make you go hmmm.

At least it was a cool looking mock-up.

HI
NOOO PANY, PLS do not do that.....it is a very bad news...... I need this size of MOCKUP, for 3000 USD in 2006 sept, He YAN, what about this project???? Is it realy cancelled????

I don't see why they don't make the super 8 looking unit.
They could give it everything the HVX200 has except HD and sell it for $3,000.
Basically a SD version of the HVX200.

The design of the DVX100a has been out long enough to pay for itself (R&D, and tooling), so they could reduce the price of that to $2,000

You would have DVX100a reduced to $2,000

The new super 8 SD camera to introduce us to P2 @ $3,000

Then the HVX200 at $6,000 for shooting HD.

Since P2 is also small form factor, why not also add a P2 only camera with an emphasis on being small and solid state....you could sell a bunch of these to Private investogators, and maybe the military as well as the guy who has everything.

I think many will want the HVX200, but really only need SD, if panasonic does not cover this base, someone else will. Panasonic has the oportunity to dominate the under $6,000 camcorder market.

Lets see if they take it.

Except that the mockup was supposed to be HD for $3,000. If you've ever seen the card with the tentative specs, it was about 90% of the HVX. The only real difference was that it was supposed to be MPEG-2 at 25 and 50 Mbps and include720p (both 30p and 60p) as well as 1080i60 and 1080p30. The only thing missing was 24p, and in a CamcorderInfo article, Joseph Facchini, director of Product Marketing for Panasonic Broadcast, was said to have hinted that it would support 24p. Who knows? Maybe it'll be released in 2006, as originally projected.

Except that the "list price" for the mockup that they gave was $3500, and it did 24P HD, not to mention, it knew exactly how you liked your toast.

Did Panasonic ever say this? All I've seen is that the $3,000 P2 prosumer cam is supposed to come out in 2006. You may be right that there will be no super 8–style MPEG-2 camcorder, but I believe there is ample reason to think there might be:

1. As you'll recall, there were actually two super 8–style mockups, an DVCHDPro and an MPEG-2, and both were displayed side by side. This tells me that both formats were being considered.

2. Panasonic's Broadcast Division even drew up tentative specs for the MPEG-2 model.

3. Joseph Facchini went on record saying it would cost about $3,000. I think it would be an incredible blunder to preannounce, in such a nascent market, a product so far in advance and with such specificity and then not release that product.

4. Jan Crittenden said the HVX200 wouldn't be based on the balsa mockup. The DVCHDPro model became the HVX200. The form factor changed -- at least in part -- to accommodate the tape drive (which would also explain some of the higher cost), as well as incorporate user suggestions. To my knowledge, she never said anything about any other forthcoming Panasonic HD products.

5. As I recall, Jan made a distinct point of describing the HVX as a professional camera as opposed to a prosumer camera. This may have been to prepare users for the cost of the camera (which, at about $6,000, is cheap considering the technology, but not realistically in the prosumer price range) and, more importantly, the cost and capacity (and thus shooting duration) of P2 cards. Her comment may also have been aimed to lay the groundwork for Panasonic's marketing plans regarding its consumer/prosumer and low-end professional HD products.

6. The MPEG-2 camera was projected to come out in 2006. Why then? As this would be the consumer/prosumer model and would appear to be P2 only, its release could be timed to coincide with the 16- and 32-GB P2 capacities projected to be available in 2006. Because the tentative specs indicated a 50-Mbps maximum data rate, durations of 30 to 60 minutes would be possible at the highest definition or frame rate. Furthermore, with the general downward price pressure on P2 technology and the success of the HVX (which should cause a significant increase in P2 production), cards with those capacities may cost far less than 4-GB cards currently do.

I think you're fishing. I vaguelly remember in a post far far away Jan shooting down the mockup saying that it would never see the light of day as a product. It wouldn't make sense to bring out a 3 thousand dollar HD camera which would eliminate the DVX line and also cut into sales of the HVX.

EDIT: Two old posts where Jan says it's just a mockup, an early design for the HVX.

I'm hardly fishing. Jan said that the HVX wouldn't be based on the mockup. She didn't say that there would be no camera based on the mockup or that there would be no MPEG-2 camera. If you scroll down to Barry Green's post, he said, "Jan's made it pretty clear that this particular camera won't be the balsa wood mockup. However, if we were to read between the lines, which is what we're all desperately trying to do (since nobody will give us any actual lines to read!) ;), would it be unreasonable to think that Panasonic may someday produce a tiny palmcorder like Bob's alluding to?"

If it wouldn't make sense to bring out a $3,000 HD camera, why did Panasonic demo it at all? And I hardly think a P2-only camera would eliminate the DVX or seriously hurt HVX sales. The HVX, which costs only a couple of grand more than the DVX, will be able to use tapes (for SD), P2 cards, and probably relatively cheap hard-disk storage; yet Panasonic doesn't seem worried and in fact plans an update of the DVX. As to hurting HVX sales, Panasonic apparently sees DVCProHD as a superior, professional solution. A P2-only MPEG-2 camera would lack the flexibility of the HVX. If anything, if such a camcorder were released before the HVX, the HVX would probably cannabilize its sales. Although there is some overlap for the three models, they have sufficiently different markets.

It's probable that they were going to make an exact competitor for the FX1, but decided to just make something that should be significantly better that includes much more.

I'd say while we are waiting for the HVX 200 (and I'm on Rush's waiting list) Panasonic should go ahead and release a DVX200 16:9.

Maybe, but, except for the option to record tape, the tentative specs for the MPEG-2 P2 camcorder were already superior in every way to those of the FX1.

Or they could make an SD version of the HVX that shoots to tape only and sell it for around $3400.... and they could call it the DVX100a.

That would be great.
:)
