Is PAL and NTSC DVCPRO HD the same?

Is only the frame rate different?

Is there only a difference in SD between PAL and NTSC?

In DVCProHD the horizontal resolution is different, so the pixel aspect ratio is also different. Pal has slightly better resolution.

SD is 525 lines in PAL, 480 lines in NTSC, different pixel aspect ratios, different frame rates, and if you're using MiniDV, different compression (4:2:0 compared to 4:1:1)

No ProfessorU, Daktulus has it correct.

The horizontal resolution is always the same: 720 pixels. The vertical resolution is different. 480 in NTSC, 525 in PAL. But only in DVCPRO and DVCPRO50! Not in DVCPRO HD!
DVCPRO HD's only difference is the framerate. 25p or 50i in PAL-Land vs. 24p , 30p or 60i in NTSC Land. DVCPRO has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels in 1080 Mode and 1280 by 720 pixels in 720 mode.
In DVCPRO HD there is no pixel aspect ratio. It's always 1:1. And last but not least, DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD both have 4:2:2 compression

No, ProfessorU has it right.

DV/DVCPRO/DVCPRO50 are very different between PAL and NTSC. In NTSC they're 720x480, in PAL they're 720x576. In NTSC, DV is 4:1:1, in PAL DV is 4:2:0. In NTSC and PAL both, DVCPRO is 4:1:1 and DVCPRO50 is 4:2:2. NTSC video runs at 59.94 fields per second, PAL video runs at 50 fields per second.

In DVCPRO-HD 720p, they both record 960 x 720 at a 1.333 pixel aspect ratio. The only difference is the frame rate.

In DVCPRO-HD 1080, the 60Hz ("NTSC") version records 1280 x 1080 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.500; in 50Hz ("PAL") it records 1440 x 1080 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.333. All versions of DVCPRO-HD are 4:2:2.

And in Varicam originated DVCPRO-HD on tape, just to further confuse the issue, there is no 'PAL' modes it's always recorded on a 60/59.94Hz rate, even shooting at a 50Hz (25 or 50fps). Making it very difficult to work with in PAL-land.

So I couldn´t use 1080i50 material for NTSC tv stations,

but 720p50 could be used?

Nobody would really care if it is 50p or 60p I guess?

What about sound?

If I set 720 variable framerate on a PAL cam to 24p (can someone describe or post a link on how to)
how would I record sound?

No. It would have to be 720p60.

On an external recorder. Or, if you're not using pN mode, the camera itself will record sound.

But 24p from the PAL camera isn't the same as 24p from an NTSC camera, the frame rate is slightly different so you'll still have to compensate in post.
