Is now the time to buy?

what do you think about getting an hvx now? they are averaging about $5100 from authorized dealers, with no rebate, no free goodies. After the p2 rebate, it seems like any new buyers are gonna miss out. future rebate plans?

the time to buy is when you NEED it and when you can AFFORD it. worrying about possible rebates or price drops is just wasted effort.

you can pay for an hvx in like 2 or 3 jobs. or often ONE job

Why not get a used DVX and learn your chops? Mastering your DVE/FX apps are half the battle as well, and that is twice as easy and fast with a DVX than with an HVX.

I bought a "grey market" HVX200 from one of these Brooklyn camera places (i think it was broadway video) last year for about $4,400. Which means you can't get a "free" p2 card from Panasonic (they at one time were offering a free p2 card) because it was from overseas (japan). Soooooooo the price isn't actually that much different from the DVX100. I would say shooting on actual HD...though can be. Most people who leap into HD don't know the other costs which are.

1) editing - faster processor for pc 3.4 or 3.6
2) more hardrive space DVC PRO HD 100 gigs equals about 111 minutes
3) P2 cards or Firestore (ain't cheap) can cost as much as the camera itself or more, depending on how much you are shooting.

Sooo your expenses are bigger than just purchasing the camera. But as always, buying a camera (the best sales) are around X-mas and after.

2) more hardrive space DVC PRO HD 100 gigs equals about 111 minutes

Not that I disagree with the spirit of your post - but just to clarify that one point, DVCPRO HD does in fact take up 100GB for 111min but that is for a full 100mb/s stream.

Most people on here seem to be shooting 720@24PN

When shooting 720 in 24PN mode 100GB of space would actually hold roughly 280min, or 4hours and 40min worth of footage.\
Pretty big difference - figured it was worth mentioning.
