Is Native 24p higher quality than 24p?

ah..I appear to be confused on MB versus Mb..still don't really know the difference but I just bought a sandisk extreme class 10 30mb/s and am planning to try the hack for the first time later today or tomorrow so we'll see what happens

I've already had the recording fail on a stock gh1 with stock class 2 8gb sandisk card when I recorded in MJPEG mode out of curiosity with no hack or anything.

Now do it without Native 24p and let us know how long each one lasts.

Ok I shot it again without the native 24p checked with the cheap 1) card. First time I shot for 1 minute and 20 seconds before I got the error and the second time I shot for 2 minutes and 30 seconds and I decided to stop shooting. Not sure why there was so much difference between the two...

There are undoubtedly some Class 6 cards out there that are faster than some Class 10 cards. The Class rating only references a MINIMUM writing speed, not the maximum. If the card was released prior to the Class 10 designation being available, then even if it was capable of 30 megabytes per second, it would still have been called Class 6.

In the tests I've seen (and done), the fastest consistent performers are the Sandisk Extreme 30mB/sec Class 10, and the Panasonic Gold Class 10.

I'm on a NTSC GH1 (one year old from japan) and if I use 24p native, c-settings and the Sandisk Extreme 30MB/sec class 10 card I get write speed errors (cam freezing) on highly detailed static scenes.

Hence, buying a faster card will not solve this problem, according to my experience.

I don't have one of those cards, I keep meaning to get one and put it through the CrystalDiskMark test. I suspect it will support at least 20 megabytes per second (160 megabits) of sustained write speed, but if it does, that's a bonus. The only guarantee is that it will sustain 10 megabytes (80 megabits).

Wow, I can actually help Barry for once:

BTW I shouldn't be concerned about the slow random figures, right? - Mark

Nice - thanks for that report!

Okay, looking at it, it's nowhere near 30mB/sec in any measurement, which really shouldn't be a surprise. But the performance is still very good.

The random write is probably going to become more of an issue when your card is fragmented; a freshly-formatted card will probably be more immune to "card too slow" errors than one that's fragmented.

The other thing to keep in mind is that when I was looking for benchmarking software I found a number of websites that claim that the card readers might bottlneck benchmark tests..

Yes very true, i have a few external SDHC compatible readers and one of the cheap ones has very slow transfer compared to the others. Get what you pay for.

Probably should do the test with the supplied USB cable and card in the camera.

Interestingly, while my card reader may be limiting performance to ~18MB/s, my GH1 (and/or the supplied cable) seems to be limiting the same card to ~8MB/s. (Random Read 4KB speeds also dropped from ~4MB/s to ~1MB/s.)

I didn't see the need to retest the other two cards, but I will if anyone would like me to - Mark

P.S. I thought I should add that my GH1 is unhacked/never been hacked.

Ummmm.... i guess that only confirms the GH1's internal card transfer USB cct is optimized for a class 6 card as is recommended in the user manual. Obviously the processor writes with a different cct.

Thanks for doing the test.
