So im running windows 7 32bit (going to go 64 i think... shouldve anyways).

Mobo: Asus P5Q SE
Proc: Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7300 @ 2.66GHz, 2670 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)

GFX: Nvidia Geforce GTX 260
4 GB Ram
465 gb on my hard drive and 465 gb on my external hard drive.
Using adobe production suite CS3, (after effect premier ect)

So my question is, will my comp be running slugish or will it be up to speed and be able to edit and use after effects rather quickly without crashing ect... I'm already putting a TON of money into buy this HMC150 as they are going for around 3300, im not gunna have a ton of money for a bit to put towards this comp upgrade.

To run smoothly what should i upgrade to have it edit/run smooth. just move up to a quad core and go 64bit maybe 2gb more of ram, will that be ok? im so bad with computers.. and of course i dont have money to go i7 yet.

thanks any help is appreciated.

justin

ps. how much does a 16gb card turn into once i upload it to my comp? And how the hell do i upload it anyways since they are no longer tapes ect....

Well CS3 doesnt support AVCHD (HMC150 native format), so unless you upgrade to CS4 you wont be editing anything without transcoding the files first. If you transcode to a format you can already edit then you dont need to upgrade the PC.

I have the CS4 and can edit AVCHD in real time without any issues but I did get a new i7, Vista 64 and 12GB RAM, with raid drives to do it.

Until the upgrade I used TMPGenc Xpress which worked really well. I did all of DickIcon and the Petulant Princess on that. Diabolus Domi was on the new system witout any transcoding.

As for file sizes, without transcoding 16gb is 16gb. With transcoding it will be whatever the target file format gives you.

thanks mrfluffy =)

Damn.. im gunna be forking out alot of money  time for CS4 too woohoo... isnt CS5 comming out soon anyways?

so TMPGenc Xpress is the thing to use to switch formats? Do you lose quality when you do this? alot min none?>

The quality loss depends on what format you choose. A png .mov file will lose nothing and be huge. My PC shuld not be considered minimum spec. Its designed for heavy VFX and rendering and given that Premier and After Effects only run in one thread a multicore is overkill.

I'm running an iMac 2.4 GHZ with 1 gig of ram. Chokes on 1080, purs like a cat with 720. I'm hilariously pushing it in regards to the ram though haha

ok. good to know ill most likely be ok... whats the better decision here..

Buying CS4 package, or buying a new cpu and continue transcoding.. does transcoding take a while to do?

I'm running i7 and I transcode first. Mostly because I don't like editing interframe codecs and also since Edius does not play them back smoothly yet (update coming).

The transcoder from Panasonic is quite good and fairly simple to use. If you want a codec that does not lose vertical info then try tmpgenc or equivalent and use DNxHD from Avid.

Most of the stuff I edit I just use the Panasonic "Main Concept" AVCHD to P2 (DVCPro HD) transcoder, which you can download from panasonic once you register your camera.

As far as I know, all the major NLE's need to be written to a 64bit version. I don't think any of them are yet. CS4 and Edius do utilise hyperthreading though. Not sure about the others. I know edius5 should be (when it comes out) and CS5 probably will be as well.

I'm using an Intel 2.2ghz pentium dual core processor with 2 gb of ram.

I can cut AVCHD video but I cannot do color correction without re-rendering the whole timeline.

I should add that if you are doing multicam edits or anything with multiple streams of video and you are cutting AVCHD then you will have problems regardless of AVCHD compatibility.
