***Is it still worth it to get a Canon 5D?

I'm mostly a semi-pro videographer (edit fulltime) and I know this camera has been out forever...is it still worth it to get one?

Or are there better choices/a new 5D coming out?

Thank you.

It can still produce one-of-a-kind shots, but it's not very sharp and has huge problems with moire. For portraits with the subject wearing safe materials, it can still knock my socks off.

I just bought another. It has gotten cheaper and it still seems a deal for the quality of the build, video image and stills.

I see you are selling your FS100. I can tell you this, when I went back to playing with a 5D after having my FS100, I just couldn't do it. The image is SO soft compared to the FS100, and the rolling shutter is half as fast.

Now, the 5D DEFINITELY handles highlight blow outs better, but above with the moire issues I was having, I just stopped using it.

I'd wait if you don't need something right now. Or, if you are considering a 5D, just use a t3i with the smaller sensor (since you are used to that with the FS100) to hold you over. That's my opinion anyways. :)

Yea, we jumped the gun a little with purchasing the FS100...it's amazing, but we just don't shoot that much. 90% of work is post.

Looking for a DSLR if and when we need one..the main ones are 5D, GH2 or T3i..

If it were me I'd go GH2 or T3i and just save the extra money for now. I think the 5D is a really fun camera, but, I like S35 sized sensors myself. With the GH2 you can avoid the color moire and it has a rolling shutter performance on par with Canon. With the hacks, the GH2 is superior. Though I still have a 7D that I love. :) I shot a lot on it so it has a special place for me. Even though I don't shoot it still, haha :)

If you liked the FS100 the NEX-5N is also a very good option for both stills and video.
That said, the main reason for which I have purchased the 5D mk II after having already the 550d is that the full frame sensor allows me to use much more often a multitude of awesome vintage "telephoto" lenses (85mm - 135mm) which are too long on a crop sensor camera.
The 5d mk II is also an excellent stills camera. This makes me currently shoot much more stills than video.

Personally the "softness" of the Canons for video doesn't bother me. I like the organic look instead and I often use anamorphic lenses which further soften the image a bit. But of course this is a question of personal taste. What bothers me most when it happens is moire on wide angle shots. But I also like a lot the colors and dynamic range from the Canons.

In the end you have to decide based on your personal and/or professional needs and budget.
Of course there will be a better full frame camera soon. The D4 has a good potential already.
But this makes the 5dmkII look as a "bargain" if it covers your needs...

This is a tongue in cheek comment typed when tylenol pm is about to kick in, ;) -in terms of resale value and obsolescence,
If you get a 5D now, I think the 5D will hold its value longer than, say conventional videos only camera, say for instance the c300,
for the fact that once a new video camera comes out (and its coming out in droves) its game over for these video only cameras, in my tipsy opinion, :)
since the 5D is a very capable full frame still camera as well, it would still be much in the top of its game even if 4K will be in vogue! ...my brain could be wrong. ;)

Nope, the 5D being full frame only accounts for a particular look. It has nothing to do with 4k.

Gary, the full frame I meant is as a still camera, partaining to its resalability to those shooters not concerned with its video features. Sorry, should have clarified that. ;)... still managing some thought here despite the pills I took.. its taking me 2 hours to get knocked out. ;)

..its an exaggeration of the premise that even if other cameras or the market has already embraced 4k,( like it leaving SD for HD), the 5D being full frame STILL camera would make it still hold its value for resale to stills enthusiasts.

Reminded of the strengths and weaknesses this weekend.

Wide shot of a city skyline from a couple miles away with lots of electric/telephone lines, patterns of windows on the buildings, etc.... at sunset, major struggle to get a good shot because of moire and aliasing.

Shot of traffic on a busy downtown street at night, freaking mind blowingly gorgeous.

It is what it is and is, very very good in some situations, and not so great in others.

Despite a lot of people right now "holding out" for a mk3, this is still a great camera and will hold it's value for a few more years especially for still photographers.

Nobody in this forum knows when is coming out, IMO it's gonna be release after the hype for the new 1DX is over, I don't think Canon is going to jeopardize their sales by releasing 2 full frame bodies at the same time, so my answer to the question if it is worthy to get a 5DMKII, I say yes.

I have had the GH1(3) before and a T2i, I still love this 5D Mark II. If you are in a business aspect, Producers and Directors are always looking for 5D's and 7D's for their Documentaries and interviews. But I am looking into the FS100 myself.

Also, Just an FYI, this movie was shot on a Canon 7D and Paramount bought it for Sundance 2012 for $4 million.

I bought one but haven't had a gig show up that could use it so I've kept it in the box unopened. If I get in a pinch, I bet it would sell quickly in the Marketplace here for the same price I bought it for. There's a decent wait to get one after you buy them...even a few months depending on the time of year.

I'm dying to try it out, but I learned my lesson. Don't want to sacrifice what I'll lose opening it just to give it a go LOL.
