Is it possible? Native 720p crop from centre frame to enable good use of 1/2" lenses

I understand the following 3 areas.

1) There are many lenses out there that would benefit from a 720 crop of the centre portion of the GH1's sensor. C-mount lenses to name just one.

2) tester13's amazing hack currently has the ability to crop a 720p image from the top left of the 1080p AVCHD video. I also know attempts were made to centralise the 720p crop, any news on this anyone?

3) MJPEG allows re-sizing of it's output giving For example, 1440x1080 to provide anaorphic widescreen natively(with a little stretch in post). Could this output be changed to 720p, and would this allow a true 720p centre crop from the GH1 sensor?

Before anyone says just buy a G2 or a new GH2 as these have this capability natively(EV zoom in G2 & Digital zoom in amazing 1080p in the GH2)! I wish I could, but I can't afford it. Boo hoo!

Anyone any thoughts on the above?

1) Afaik this is not possible with GH13 in-camera. Buy a GH2 :) sorry

2) don't know

3) As for 1440x1080, that is not yet native 4:3, but 1920x1080 compressed into 1440x1080, so you still have a 16:9 aspect ratio. For instance, using a 2x anamorphic with 1440x1080 still is essentially 1920x1080 but distorted. So times 2 = 3840x1080 (3.58) instead of 2880x1080 (2.66) That said, a 4:3 mode at higher resolutions is in the making.

Why don't you just crop the video in post? That way you can pick out exactly where you want the crop to be, in case the vignette is better or worse in different parts of the frame. You could even just export it in premiere cs5 with a crop of 1280x720 and just edit the footage with the vignette. It may not be the same as getting it natively on the gh2. But last time I checked, it was cheaper to crop a video you already have then to pay a grand for a new gh2..
