Is it possible for a camera to "Eat" a memory card?

I have a videographer that lost the footage for a project. We took it to a specialist and the first specialist said they couldn't repair it using simple methods and would have to check inside the mechanics of the card, but they weren't comfortable opening it up. We took it to another lab/specialist, and they did check the card more thoroughly and instantly figured out that the card is damaged inside. I asked if it was physically damaged and they said it's impossible to tell and impossible to recover.

The first specialist guessed that the camera (shot with an a7sii) could have corrupted the card. Something was wrong with the camera in that it was actually eating/corrupting/damaging the memory cards that were inside it.

My first question is is that possible? Can a camera, if something is wrong with it internally, corrupt/eat/damage a memory card?

I am hoping that this videographer isn't a sinister person and ran over the card by accident with his car or something and isn't telling me what truly happened. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Cameras can/do corrupt memory cards, but they rarely damage them to the point of being unusable.

You always need to format the cards within the camera that will be using them if they are bouncing around various systems.

If you do find that your camera is killing every card no matter what then something is definitely wrong with the camera...but usually corruption results from a cheap card, bad card (lemon from the company), or a card has reached the end of its life cycle after heavy use (rare).
