i am new to FCP. after shooting a short film, i jumped right into editing the footage that is dvcprohd 720p24. i have a rough cut done and was asking a friend of mine that is going to be handling the digital fx what type of files he prefers to do his work in. after he found out i was editing with the .mxf files he said i should be editing in .mov quicktime files. am i going to have to go back, log and transfer each clip and re-edit my clips or can i just continue then export as a quicktime movie? or can i select all my master clips and export them as quicktimes and from then on log and transfer new clips that i might edit with?

Well yes and no. If you already have imported them with the log and transfer of FCP- you have changed them from .MXF to .MOV and there's nothing to be gained by making them MXF again.

In fact you'll then be requiring additional plugins like Raylight or MXF4QT to work with them. If your buddy needs files for VFX simply export shots as an uncompressed .MOV or a TIF or TGA sequence and have him send back the same to preserve as much image quality as possible.

thanks for the reply Noah!! i have not log and transfered anything. everything is still mxf. so what can i do when the VFX files are sent back to me as .movs and need to be incorporated into the mxf edit?

Well like I said editing MXF is not necessary at all and in fact the FCP workflow as is expects you to use .MOV. It's only MXF if you want it to be. But how are you planning to deliver footage to the VFX artist anyway? They should be sending you uncompressed .MOVs or image sequences, which you drop into your edit and render for viewing as needed. Otherwise you'll be compressing the footage several times going back and forth and lost a lot of image quality. May I humbly suggest my DVD to help sort out the issues? :)

At any rate MXF and MOV can be on the same DVCPROHD timeline provided you get one of the MXF plugins to begin with.
