is it normal that the DVX100a shuts down by its self after a couple of minutes when your not recording? is there a way to change this?
 
yes normal on most cameras actually unless you change it. Go to menu, other functions, tape protect and switch it to standby. But beware as your battery will run down faster because you forget to turn it off in between things.

Did a short yesterday and was trying to remember how to shut that freaking feature off... Trying to frame a shot with lighting and using the camera to check it all out while it's being set up and the camera shut down just about everytime..... I knew it could be disabled but I forgot how..... oh well...
