Is it just me, or is there a screendoor effect from this camera?

I have been watching lots of footage lately from the Canon 5D II
In a lot of footage online, I am seeing a screen door effect
(It looks like I am looking through a screen door... seeing the screen)

It could be my computer, or the grid of my computer screen.
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

I think its you... although if you can show us some of the screen door footage your talking about maybe we can see it too ?
I have a few dslr's and I dont see it. There's some good comparison footage of the 5D/GH1 and Red and they all look quite similar with no effect like what you mention,
so I would imagine your monitor/computer might be going

It's not just you. Even at 320 ISO the pattern can be seen, you just have to look for it. Higher ISO's it's pretty obvious. In addition, if you're talking about patterns on clothing, etc, that's Moire and you're definitely not the only one seeing that.

Can you send me a link to footage where you're seeing this effect? I haven't seen anything like that on my monitor or on my tv...

I think Kholi is right, and he is seeing moire. He said " screen door "and initially it sounded more like some weird thing nobody has seen before. Moire, we are all seeing

I am sure he knows what "moire" is. I haven't notice any "screen door" effect at any ISO. I've seen a lot of of badly in and out of focus, ridiculous shallow DOF and dizzily hand held footage. Thats for sure. When you watch movies and TV series shot by pros you don't see any of that stuff. Maybe in music videos but not professionally shot films. But a built in "screen door" filter? Nope.

After further investigation, it seems as if this is not in the footage, but from what I have seen, only shows up on certain screens (so it must be the screen).

In my case, it was on an L.E.D. screen, and only noticable upclose.
I did not see this on my plasma or when projected.

It also only seemed noticable when moving, not as a still image.... strange.

Glad this is not in the footage.

Is this what you're seeing? It takes on a cross hatched pattern, like a screen door.

ISO 160 is better than ISO 100.

ISO 640:

Cause this absolutely does show up in footage. Depending on how footage is viewed, it may or may not be "seen" easily but it's there.

I've never seen it in footage...thanks Kholi you freak! Now i'll be looking for it non-stop...i though we were boys mane...i thought we were boys

Lol.

I saw it first time I saw mkii footage but it's not distracting. It's more prevalent in iso out of the native range. At 640 I can see it readily but I don't mind it. It adds a certain texture to the image.

It's definitely not good for keying though. The pattern interferes in our experience. You have to shoot 160 iso for a good key. Finally got a really good one for some test shots recently.

If you playback footage directly to you HD LCD. Sit a bit beneath your screen, that's how I first saw it.

What I saw was hard to pinpoint due to it only seeming visable when the footage was playing.
If I paused the footage, I didn't really see it.

When played back on different sets, I didn't notice it on all screens.
It does show up on my laptop when playing.
The laptop has an led screen.

It is subtle, not in your face, and I only seen it on footage with an image, didn't try it on a black background.

Not a deal breaker, but would like to know the source.

It's pretty easy to tell if it's your laptop or not (which it probably isn't). Just drag the quicktime window around without moving your eyes. If you can see the pattern then it's the screen, if it moves with the image then it's in the footage.

Or find some high ISO footage and look at it, see if it's the same pattern but much more obvious. It's in GH-1 footage as well, but I only noticed it in the MJPEG stuff.

Gotcha, I try not to go too much above 640 but i'll definitely be aware of the issue from now on especially if I do some blue screen stuff.
