is it just me, or do a lot of DSLR videos that i watch have unusually small DOF?

is this because the optics are somehow different? or because the DP is getting carried away with that visual style?

Well, shallow DOF is the main advantage of the larger sensor HD-DSLRs. Any new toy will incitivize the over playing with that toy.

When watching HDSLR videos I often grow board of the shallow depth of field. I would say that there are probably quite a few people who forget that wide, deep focus shots are possible when given a tool that can provide shallow depth of field so easily. I'd probably be one of those people if I owned a HDSLR.

Full frame cameras have MUCH shallower DOF thn even other HDSLR's. 5DmkII is abnormally shallow when compared to S35 camera work.

i have a gh1. and using it with my 50mm, f/1.4 - the DOF is pretty freakin shallow.

but im guessing thats just because its the same 35mm cam optics, just cropped. the stock lens, which is made for micro 4/3rds chips is less shallow - granted its also a slower lens.

The stock lens at 50mm should perform similarly to a 35mm lens at 50mm at the same aperture...sure there are different levels of optical quality but DOF should be about the same.
