Is it getting that bad?

What I don't get is how we can't talk about politics, but we can talk about sports! Whatever. If you don't like the rules start your own forum. As someone who occasionally ventures into the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Ain't It Cool News, I appreciate the civility I usually find here.

As do I. It is refreshing to talk with adults for a change. But what are "the rules" you mention?

I have been on this board for about 3 or 4 years myself, and I've gotten to know some users and met some mods in person. Overall they are great people. I'm not saying they don't have a tough job, and I am not saying they are being malicious. I've learned a ton here in the past years, and I would like to hope that I have given something back as well. I link this site on my company page and I tell people about it all the time as it is the best online resource I have ever seen for filmmaking.

I am just offering up the possibility that the closing of threads may at times seems somewhat arbitrary. Obviously I am not alone.

Maybe there could be a soapbox board down at the very bottom of the main page for more debatable discussion. If that happened I think it'd be a pretty good collaboration from both parties. It'd keep the Cafe and others free of "heated" issues and those who want to discuss those things could still be able to do it. I think it should still be moderated.

I don't know how well that would work though. It could cause some members to become upset at each other outside of it, and possibly make the site more of a negative place. I'm glad it's not my decision. :)

Personally I don't think that is necessary. The cafe seems to exist so that we can discuss things non-film related, since we get to know each other elsewhere on the boards.

Those types of discussions (religion/politics, etc.) can be discussed elsewhere, or between members in private. I used to do that with Jerry XCheck all the time. Where did he go anyway...?

"ohh my God here we go, I was asking a question, see this is reason why things get bad, its like some poeple here act like 3rd graders"

I'm not saying don't speak up for yourself, but the snide way you chose to go about it was just asking for trouble. Maybe you're not well versed in "netiquette", but if you look at posts by some other users on the forum, maybe you can get a better grasp on how you should construct your posts so that they're actually taken seriously.:dankk2:

I respect the job the moderators do and understand how hard it can be as well (I'm a mod on some other boards). Making a judgement call is tough in this day and age, but some of the threads closed is just strange in my opinion.

That was just my contribution,

Kegan

or if you still feel the need to write something horribly insulting, at least include a smiley face at the end. :)

kegan I think you are too sensetive when it comes to having to agree with something, remember this is a forum, you are on the internet some people here are on the other side of the world, this is the free world man there is no netiquette" in the web, its a world where you can be who ever you want to be

haha now this is sounding like a movie but you get my point

You do have the right to be who you want to be...on your own forum. Just like you can do whatever you want in real life too...in your own home. I'm sure you'll find it offensive if I start calling you names in real life, so why should anyone feel that they can do it over the net without hurting other people? The point of "netiquette" is so that everyone can interact in a civil and productive manner online. Just look at some of the places where you can say anything and be anything and tell me that you can honestly get a good discussion going there.

point is no one can change no one, everyone wants to be right just look at this thread now, excuse my spelling I am not american

there are other forums across this vast wasteland, otherwise known as the internet, where you can discuss politics, religion and other matters of substance as they relate to filmmaking. this isn't one of them and that's been well established for some time. for anyone serious about these topics I suggest looking elsewhere. you're likely to find the breadth of discussion more developed and rewarding than would ever be permitted here.

good point!!! now lets talk filmmaking!!!!

I'm not trying to unnaturally prolong this discussion, but I feel it necessary to point out that I am not talking about those issues, nor were the threads I mentioned. Nor was there any vulgarity, pornography or racial slurs.

I have no wish to discuss politics or religion here. That's what my wife is for. Well, one of the things anyway.

I still am looking for the answer as to why threads are locked. I understand completely why some posts are deleted by mod's, but why lock the entire thread when nothing offensive has been said? (Basically, I'm asking the same thing as the original poster).

Look... if you really want to discuss the iffy topics in a locked thread, you can PM the earlier participants. The "locking", if you ask me, is a generous way to allow y'all to enter private discussions while cutting off a thread headed in the wrong direction.

Remember, for better or worse, people bear at least partial responsibility for the content of their websites, and can be liable for it. Further, certain discussions will damage the nice community here. I think, especially for topics in the "Cafe" that don't necessarily relate to the main goals of this community, you have to cut the moderators a lot of slack in their efforts to keep us all happy and productive.

In defense of the mods here. I know none of them personally. As I know none of you personally. But I was a forum admin on a website two years ago before we shut down. We had close to this amount of users, and many new users who would always jump on. Now, a little background. We were a paintball webforum sponsored by a major magazine. So we had a ton of traffic, and a nice user base that was there for a year or more. We kept the forum going, and many times frantically deleted posts, warned members, and locked topics if something went terribly astray. After a while we began to figure it would be easier to kill it at the source, if something came up that looked nasty, we would see how it would go and then kill it the second it took a dive.

It is a lot of work, and for a volunteer job, its pretty insane. I commend the guys here on their work. They do a great job. Personally I would never want to be a mod again...ever. I just like being a poster. Much less worries. They have a thankless job, hand it to them for keeping DVXuser an amazing place to be.

Now if one of them locked a topic that was about the use smiley faces, I think we would have something to complain about. :)

Okay, so a thread about beating the crap out of a bunch of little kids (which I found very amusing, BTW), or one that flirts with making fun of people's english skills is acceptable, but one reposting an AP news story about an actress (yes, i use the term loosely) getting pregnant isn't...?

I just want it to make some sense. Aside from things like searching and making sure you post in the appropriate forum, the only staements I have seen about content are:

Please don’t post any messages on the topics of—politics, religion, or explicit sexuality -- Not that we don’t find these topics interesting—we do, but they’re not appropriate for this filmmaking forum.
and
Please don’t post any images or links to images with explicit sexual content -- Nudity in still images is not acceptable. Links to films that contain nudity are acceptable as long as the post is appropriately labeled for content. Links to any pornographic content are unacceptable.
by Hudson and

No Politics
(just don't go there, please. We've tried it, it doesn't work; there are many other sites you can discuss politics on, just not this one please)

No Pornography
(discussions of pornographic films, websites, the business of producing it, the morals of it, etc are not welcome here)

No Personal Attacks
(no flaming, no namecalling)

No Prosletyzing
(i.e., don't bring religion into it either)

No Profiteering
(don't try selling your products here unless you're an official site sponsor. It costs a lot of money to administer this site, those costs are defrayed by our sponsors, and it's not fair to paying sponsors to have people using the site they pay for used to promote other products. This means no commercial signatures and no advertising, unless you're an official DVXUser site sponsor; those wanting to become site sponsors should send a PM to Jason Ramsey, DVXUser Marketing Manager.)

and, finally:

No Pi$$ing In The Pool
(this is a new one, but basically it's aimed at trying to cut down the amount of whining/complaining/dead-horse beating that occasionally happens, which brings negativity to all those it touches. Complaining and beating dead horses is like urinating in the pool -- it may make you feel good, but it kind of ruins it for everyone else.)
By Barry Green.

How did those locked threads violate any of that?

Really, I am not trying to be a pain in the @ss. I just want to understand.

So you're saying the thread might have been locked to protect the site from liability from the K*k?

Ok. At Jim:

The KKK thread that you mentioned. The original poster had originally started a thread entitled "I want to joint the KKK". His post was about 5 sentences long asking how to make a KKK hat, etc, etc... The very last line of his post was "It's for a movie"...

So, your browsing through the forums, you see a thread with the title "I want to join the KKK"... hmm... personally, I don't really care what's in it... It's just in bad taste to do that (in my opinion), and one should know that it is likely to provoke some sort of reaction that is not going to be productive to the forum at large, or to their real question, if indeed they had one.

So, that original thread was deleted. The original poster then went and created a new thread after his original had been deleted. However, he had worded it appropriately and so it was allowed to run. But, surely you can see why it was on a tight leash though, knowing just a bit more information.

Regarding the LP Spears thread, or whatever.... It is a filmmaking forum after all. There is plenty of gossip talk and such that goes on here. Some stays, some goes... but seriously (and not being mean, just frank) who really cares whether there is some britney spears thread posted, deleted, or closed on dvxuser? Sorry, but it's just gossip talk and doesn't add anything to the forum at all, so I don't see why one might express concern at a thread of that sorts demise. Make sense? Some stuff stays, some goes... When the cafe gets too cluttered with gossipy stuff, it begins to spill over into other parts of the forum. Nothing is lost in losing a Britney Spears thread on DVXuser (Online community for filmmaking), and nothing is really gained by posting it either... Sometimes, it's an interesting topic and it gets talked about a lot. Sometimes, we just see it, and go clickity, click, click... there's been enough of that today, or whatever... We're not keeping tabs :) Just trying to keep the noise manageable. Some people don't like seeing nothing but gossip threads on the front page of the new posts.

About explanations when locking threads... Ok... Britney Spears gossip thread... explanation really needed? :) Sometimes it may stay for a while, but if it goes on and on with silliness, it's likely to go away if it doesn't on it's own.

Also, there are times when posting a public explanation would be counter-productive, as not all things are for public consumption. Also, posting explanations leads to further threads, or people feeling the need to respond and taking it into another part of the forum, or creating another thread... Better to just head all that off at the pass and pm a mod and politely ask what's up.

If it's a thread in the cafe, I don't see a need for explanation most of the time, unless something needs reinforcing. Other parts of the forum, you are more likely to see an explanation of a thread closing.

One more big reason. There have been times in the past when mods would provide an explanation and close a thread, or something, and it would lead to an angry member, spamming, harrassing, etc, etc... that mod. No need for that. So, sometimes we like to keep things anonymous.

Phew... anyways... hope that helps a bit. This thread, for example... while it could have potentially been a useful thread for you guys to vent (politely) and raise potentially legitimate concerns, make suggestions, etc, etc..., there hasn't been much of that... Just some bickering and a bit of name-calling. And, yet here we are... four pages later :)

Hope that explains a little and gives a bit of insight. There's generally more to the story than meets the eye. No one's perfect.

And, this is both an appropriate and fitting end for this thread(for my own amusement too).

Later,
Jason
