I noticed that the thread about making a KKK hood was locked, despite the fact that there seemed to be nothing offensive about it. Yes, some mild fun was poked at those morons who buy into that ignorant rhetoric, but nothing more. It was a thread about wardrobe fer crying out loud.

I started a thread a few weeks ago about JL Spears getting pregnant, and that one was locked as well despite the fact that not one offensive thing was stated in the 5 posts, and it was actually a legitimate AP news story.

I get the no politics/no religion/respect other members thing. This isn't like Yahoo or IMDb and I am glad that we stay civil here. But it seems like threads are now being shut down because there is some potential that they might get offensive to somebody at some point in future. Maybe. Possibly.

I vote heavy handed overkill.

But I've only been back on the boards for a month or so after a long absence. Maybe this is the way it has been for a while.
 
sometimes people say things in a thread that you don't see because the post gets erased quickly by a mod. so even though you may not see anything offensive, that doesn't mean people weren't submitting inappropriate posts.
 
I understand that too, but I've noticed that things are getting locked more and more frequently as well. Not only that, but when something has been posted twice, they get locked - I get that, but if you looked at how many "what tripod should I get for $50?" threads, you'd never understand why these newer ones are getting locked.

Threads are getting locked more and more and sure it may be to keep everything civil, but pretty soon we're not going to have anything to talk about and the Cafe might as well be shut down.

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but you catch my drift, right?

Okay, then erase the offensive post and warn the poster. Why punish everyone? Are we children?
 
I had a feeling it was going to happen...

I had made some tongue in cheek comments, as had a few others...maybe there was a risk of offending actualy racists...

Though nothing I posted was erased...the thought did cross my mind.

haha. it's probably not a good idea to be calling out individual mods. i have a bad feeling this thread is headed towards lockdown.

Because you accused a mod of doing something unethical without any evidence. That's generally frowned upon...

As for the topic here, I do think that if a thread is locked, the mod that locks it should post an explanation before locking it. If nothing else, just so everyone knows what they did wrong so they don't do it again.
 
I was just expressing my opinion without insulting anyone, what are we in the military here or what? it's lookin' that way
 
I love the smell of banning in the morning...The smell, you know that pwnage smell, the whole thread. Smelled like... victory...
 
in the mods' defense, they do have a much bigger responsibility than the ordinary poster. while something might not offend you, it may offend someone of a different nationality, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, whatever... they have to take into account how someone from a different perspective could see things and make a judgment call oh how offensive it is. everyone has their own limits as far as what they consider acceptable, so it is better to err on the side of caution, imo.
 
Most of the mods have been on the site for 4 years and they're pretty good at telling when a thread is headed downhill. They know that a mac vs. PC thread will quickly turn into an insult-fest, so they close it. As they've outlined before, there are other forums where you can discuss these "hot topic" issues.
 
What I don't get is how we can't talk about politics, but we can talk about sports! Whatever. If you don't like the rules start your own forum. As someone who occasionally ventures into the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Ain't It Cool News, I appreciate the civility I usually find here.
