Is it foolish to buy an HP170 right now?

To me, and it's just my opinion, the 250 in the panny lineup replaces the 170. Hand held, 1/3 chip camera.
They are not going to make DVCPROHD cams anymore. Running with the AVCIntra and all.

Yes the 170 is still around.

The 250 does dvcprohd. I think it will stick around much like newer models of Sony decided to add standard def flavors. Backwards compatibility is another good reason for loyal customers to come back.

And yes, the 170 is a great buy, well worth it.

You're right, the 370 also does DVCPROHD. I forgot about that.
I still would probably get the 170 over the 250.

Why is that, videoatlanta? Is that because you already own a 370, with similar guts as the 250? Or is it the cost savings? Or is there something else—non-technical—that makes the 170 images preferable over the 370/250? (We know the 370/250 beats out the 170 on purely technical comparisons)

The HPX170 is not discontinued. It's a current model. The HPX250 is a model above it, which is why a) it has a higher number, 250 instead of 170, and b) it costs $2,000 more.

A replacement would imply that the "replaced" product is discontinued. The HPX170 isn't discontinued, it's a current model. The HPX250 is an addition to the handheld P2 lineup.

Relax Barry, As I added, it was just my opinion and the way I look at the Panny cams line up. It's just my opinion. As I also wrote, I know the 170 is still available.
The 170 does not replace the 250.
