Is having a center tripod mount on a slider a must-have feature?

I'm asking because I'm debating whether to back the Kickstarter Rhino slider project (carbon fiber version, for its light weight), or whether to just go ahead and get a Konova K5 but deal with its much heavier / bulkier profile...

It is for me when I shoot in lightweight mode.

And honestly, is the weight difference between the two sliders that significant.

Get the slider that has the features you really need, quiet, smooth, mounting options, and such, even if you have to save a little longer because of higher cost.

I have a Pocket Dolly 2, and really wished I had poped for the Cineslider instead because of the higher payload ability.

Hey David thanks for the comment. They both cost around the same, but one is 3lbs and the other almost 10lbs I think.

I hear you on the payload capacity. Knowing the 7lbs difference in weight, should that still be a major factor?

i pledged for the carbon fiber but am thinking about going to pro version

can you buy center mounts elsewhere?

not to my knowledge, sliders are kinda their own individual animals. the manufacturer either offers it or not.

i guess in some cases you could bolt something in. but in most of them that would likely compromise the performance of the slider.

I use an Igus setup from time to time. It has holes all along the length which can be tapped to 3/8-16 so you can attach release plate (or plates) anywhere on it. If I'm doing a short move I center mount it - if it's a long move I support it from both ends and bring my (nice & sturdy Manfrotto) stills tripod with me for one end. It's much faster to setup and level with a center mount, but (mine is 46" long) the range of motion is limited, even if I strip the rig way down.

Well I ultimately decided to get the Konova K5, which has a center mount. I figured I'd get all the features I need while I'm still learning so that I don't limit myself in how I use my gear in the future. Can't wait!
