Is GH2 AF as fast as a Base Ball?

Wait hold the music i got a way better idea - rip the head off a store manquin and chuck that at the camera. Yes!!!!

I filmed a hockey from right behind the goal last night. I think you guys will like the footage from that a little better. It will take me a few days to post it though.

So what AFC lens should I do that shallow depth of field test with? There really isn't an m4/3s lens that can do a shallow depth of field at 60 feet 6 inches and still keep the ball in the frame. I need something like the Canon 55mm F1.2 that will auto focus. I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Here is what it looked like at 140mm F5.8. The issue was that the path of the ball was outside of the frame until the last second. It was too close to the camera to focus at that point.

As I was saying before, just zoom all the way in, 140mm@f5.8 is fine, and walk fast towards the camera, if it can keep you in focus from 30ft to 10ft I will be impressed. If it can track you running I'll be even more impressed. Obviously this would be more of a challenge at f2 but if it can do it smoothly without hunting even at f5.8 that is still pretty groundbreaking.

I will try that when I get the chance. However, I am still curious as to why people expect the camera to AutoFocus in situations that you could never manually focus in? If it is impossible to use MF in that scenario then I wouldn't expect AF to work either. What I would rather do is find all of the scenarios where the GH2 can replace manually focusing or the AF of a camcorder. I definitely found that in the hockey game I shot last night. I don't think the guy standing next to me with the $20,000 camera setup from the TV station was getting better shots than I was.

Im willing to bet a good focus puller could maintain focus on a fast ball. It would have to be by feel obviously, but i bet it could be done for say a slow motion type of shot. You would most likely have to throw a hundred pitches to get a good focused shot, but it could be done. Now why you would want to is another story all together. hehe

I just did some quick checks myself on AF speed. Had it on AFC, face tracking, 14-140mm lens, F5.8, 140mm. It can keep focus if I sprint at the camera, though there are times I am in focus. I have to go at a slow jog for it to track.

But on liveview mode when taking photos, the AFC tracking works great it can track me sprinting at the camera, not sure whether it's because of the 120Hz sensor rate or it's they deliberately slowed down the autofocus when in AFC mode to make it more filmic.

I think this tells us even less than the first video about focus tracking. Sorry to be such a critic, truly I am, but this is just a deep focus shot with no noticeable focusing.

I didn't say that video has anything to do with focus tracking. It is simply just an example of a fast paced action video.

Nobody ever said the GH2 will do focus tracking. It cannot. However, it will continually focus properly when you don't do stupid things like zoom in too tight on a fast moving subjects. Also just because you don't see the focus changing in the video doesn't mean it isn't happening. In fact I would consider it a blown shot if you can clearly see the focus changing while filming a single subject.
