Is CS5 worth it?

Here is a quick snapshot of what I have.

1.Dell XPS Studio with i7 and all the other bells and whistles.

2. Premiere Elements 8.

3. Lots and lots of memory.

4. Canon HF 200/ AVHCD format.

Premiere elements 8 is not working for me. It constantly crashes and I have to constantly render my footage which takes a long time depending on the clip. If I do not render it, it skips and stutters.

CS5 is not cheap but I heard it can edit AVCH native. Unfortunately the trial version does edit AVCHD format.

Do you think I should take the plunge? I probably swing it but it would hurt awhile but the time and aggravation of using Premiere is getting old.

Just a side note: I'm finding CS5 GUI weird as hell, specially in some programs where the upper bar is thicker like Fireworks (which I use a lot).

Out of the all the upgrades Premiere has ever had, CS5 is definately the most worthwhile upgrade yet. Especially if you have a mercury capable card.

Yep. You'll be amazed at the performance increase in editing AVCHD. I've got the Adobe Production Premium CS5 package. I've used most of the aps in the package and found all are stable and solid, with the exception of Encore. Encore does what it should and performs well, but it's the only one of the apps I've had stability problems with. That's irritating, but it could just have been a learning curve problem on my part too. It would be nice if Adobe put more resources into Encore and made it a little more logical to use (that is, it would be nice if it's UI was more like the other apps), particularly the menu and button creation parts. The way they handle button sub-pictures is just wild and completely non-intuitive, and IMHO shouldn't be that difficult to fix, if only Adobe would fix it. But even that is fairly easy to handle due to the help of people who populate forums like this one.

So yes, go for it. I doubt you'll regret an upgrade to CS5.

Agreed, I just upgraded to CS5 as well and must say that it is blistering quick. I am accelerating the video with a gtx470 on 3 video streams (multicam) and it keeps up no problem. I am currently using a windows 7 machine ith an I7-950 and 12 GB or ram and a raid 0 scratch/project drive. I dont see it use that much ram though. The only quirk I havent figured out yet is the autosync of footage. The .mts footage out of my HMC-150s does have timecode embedded, I just cant see it in premiere pro CS5 and it's driving me crazy. I hate having to manually sync footage. what a genuine pain in the ass! It is true that I could just do it in edius but after trying CS5 with the MPE I doubt I will go back (edius is CPU only), I just need to figure out the timecode sync problem stat.
