Is B&H Slipping?

I was in the States a few weeks ago. Placed an order with B&H for a 6D, X100, Singh Ray Fader ND, and some other stuff. Came to about $3200. The 6D came with a bag and a Lexar 16GB 400x SDHC card.

The card was bad. I had formatted in camera but the images would only off-load two at a time before I had to remove and re-insert into my laptop. Other cards worked fine and other computers saw the same issue with the troublesome card. What was perhaps most bothersome about the card is that after conducting a low-level format and trying it with ten pictures, it worked fine. After that, I took 200 but then had the same problem.

I sent an email to B&H explaining everything and asking if they can send it to me in Israel. They respond saying they'll ship one to me ASAP. Email order arrives saying it's going to my billing address in the States.

I call the 212 number on the email. Some British dude says, "Hello?" Wrong number. He said he gets calls a lot from B&H customers.

I call the 800 number and explain the situation. They say they can ship it to me in Israel and the cost is $53. They're willing to take $10 off, he offers.

Now I just received pictures in the mail from my Aunt and the padded envelope she used reported that she paid a little over $2.

I asked him to look into it. He did and came back to say, "That's the shipping cost."

B&H, you're losing it. And no, the British dude was not Philip Bloom.

Can't tell you anything about the rest of it, but B&H uses UPS, not the Post Office, so the difference in shipping makes perfect sense -- though I'd expect UPS to be more than $53.

I also ship often -- from Israel. I use economy shipping with a registered number. This would cost $3.16 and it would take 1-2 weeks to arrive in the U.S.

Why they don't offer the USPS's version as an alternative to UPS I do not understand.

For international customers, UPS always spells trouble with customs, at the very least a delay.

they f*ck up occasionally but so does everybody.

What is consistent though is their prices on brand product so I like them.

I like them too. It was annoying is all. I wanted a human response to my question, "Isn't that ludicrous for shipping a 1 oz. card?" But all he would give me was, "That's the shipping cost." And, "What did the person to whom you spoke say about it?" Then, "He said that is the shipping cost." Robots. Well, robots with Brooklyn accents. Now that's an idea.

And with Amazon charging sales tax now, B&H's prices are almost always better. Too bad if you live in NY.

B&H isn't slipping: I've gotten bum SD cards before... it happens with the technology.

I've had more problems with USPS shipments (even registered or with tracking and delivery confirmation) getting lost, delayed, etc., than I've ever had with UPS or FedEx. Postal service tracking is also pretty lousy: they'll issue a tracking number, but try and see where the package is and all you'll get it, "Yep... it's been shipped." The only other update is, "Yep... it's been delivered."

So it makes sense that they would offer only UPS or the like, especially for something International.

Honestly, B&H has been reliable every time I've ordered from them, and I continue to order from them. No one is perfect, and no company will ever be 100% error-free, but in the grand scheme B&H has been pretty fantastic to me.

They won't ship USPS or use any other delivery service because they have a contract with UPS. To use another shipper would be a breach of contract and the possibility of a law suit. Yeah, it sounds stupid, I know, but that's the way things work.

Why not have a friend in NYC pick up the replacement card and have him/her mail it to you? After all, they originally shipped it to a NYC address, so you must know someone there, n'est pas?

Good to hear they're not slipping. I like B&H. And the UPS contract makes sense. If he had said that was why, I would have been cool with that. It will get popped in the mail to me; not a big deal, simply unnecessary.

And yes, sometimes memory cards have problems. Or so I hear because it's never happened to me before. Gotta make you wonder when it happens with a freebie, though.

I guess having lived out of the States for years now, my tolerance for its style of rote customer service has diminished. Ironic because it was one of the things I had missed most.

Wow, they really call in the cavalry when questioning B&H, eh?

Exactly true, there is no inexpensive and reliable International shipping from here - Fedex and UPS are reliable but even a small package will cost a lot. US Mail Express International starts around $40, but once the package is out of the country and handed over to the Mail Service of the recipient, they have no clue what is happening, tracking is a joke.
Any US Mail service below Express International level does not offer tracking information, so B&H or any other dealer would not use it for the obvious reasons.

I just ordered a 350-page coffee table sized photography book from Amazon. Standard international shipping charge: $10.98 and it will take, they say, 18-32 days. My experience has been that it's usually here in fewer than 2 weeks. I could have chosen Expedited for $15.98 and expected to receive it in 8-16 days or Global Priority for $49.98 and received it in 2-5 days. I have more patience than money so I opted for the least expensive choice.

Something ain't right if Amazon can get me a heavy book for less dinero than B&H can get me an SDHC card in the same amount of time.

Is Amazon shipping the book by UPS or USPS? It makes a difference.

Probably USPS but frankly, I don't know. Not UPS. My point is that I know that with Amazon, I will receive it and I don't need to pay through the nose for shipping and customs (which is always the case with UPS and EMS). Someone suggested that B&H has a deal with UPS. How does that benefit me, the customer? I'll get my shipment? Gee, thanks.

The bottom line is that the customer service rep should have said "We only ship via UPS and that is why the cost is outlandish. Yes, $53 is ludicrous to send a 16GB SDHC card. However, we offer no alternative. I am sorry." Instead, he said, "That is the shipping cost," as if no one could possibly conceive of any other shipping method that most people would find reasonable.

Let's not forget that I had just spent $3200 in his store! And, if he had bothered to glance at my account history, he would have noticed thousands more.

You know what? B&H should have eaten the UPS cost. It's the mass acceptance of BS that allows them to continue.

Yes, B&H is reputable and yes B&H is an honest seller. And that is sooo special because...many are not.
