i have a tascam dr-60dmkii and was thinking about adding a mixer. does anyone have a similar setup and if so, has upgrading been worth it for you?

Yes, as it happens, I regularly use a MixPre-D with a Tascam DR60 mk I (or at times the old Tascam DR100 mk I). The Sound Devices pre-amplifiers are far superior – the best – so I will have the Mixpre-D bring up the microphone level (in my case a Sennheiser 416) and avoid using "gain" in the Tascam. This means using the line input of the Tascam. I am very pleased with the results.

Have used the MixPre-D with a DR40 in a pinch. Clean, no issues other than the DR40's occasional and inconsistent drift. It certainly makes a huge difference above the recorder's pre-amps. I have often used the MixPre-D with a Fostex FR2-LE, which was my go-to kit for DSLR shoots.

Pre-amps aside, there are other things that make adding a mixer in front worthwhile. With the MixPre-D, for example, there are much better and more accurate meters, much better input limiting, and signal routing. The metering on the D is much better than on the original MixPre. The original (non-D) will still give you better pre-amps, limiting, and routing.

Plus, the headphone amps on Sound Devices mixers are much better (stronger, cleaner) than those built into budget recorders.
