Is anyone shooting anamorphic?

I have been thinking of doing this and would like to some feedback on lens etc... on doing this. I'm shooting on the NX1 4k.

We wish...

The adapters ALL look disgusting. Like ridiculously terrible. I'm sorry geffyb, but your otherwise VERY NICE piece was severely hurt by your use of that lens. the only shot where the distortion and blur didn't leap off the screen was the close up of the guy you punched in on by CUTTING OFF the entire left 1/4 and right 1/4 of the shot.

True anamorphic lenses are VERY expensive. And used correctly, they are worth the rental price. But that's all they are - rentals.
EXTREMELY few people who ever come to a forum like this can actually afford to own real anamorphic lenses. They are roughly $100,000 a set.
The Arriflex Master Anamorphic Primes cost over $250,000 for the full set.

The new SLR magic anamorphic lenses are much cheaper than that...but are still VERY expensive. Plus they don't have a lot of focal lengths and they have not really proven themselves out in the field yet.

The very commonly used Angeieux anamorphic zoom lenses are about $75,000......PER LENS.

I disagree with DPStewart that the video was hurt. I think it's fine. On the other hand, I don't think even the cheap lenses are worth the extra weight and expense. Besides, in that video you could hardly tell that it was anamorphic, and not just cropped.

Before you make such conclusions you need to understand how many "true" anamorphic lenses are actually designed. For example, nearly all Panavision anamorphic lenses consist of a front anamorphic adapter mated to an off-the-shelf prime lens in the rear, and its been that way since the early 1960's. Literally hundreds of feature films have been shot with these lenses, and they still set the standard for anamorphic image quality. Similarly, most of the Hawk anamorphics also use an adapter/prime design architecture, although they are much less popular than Panavision and haven't received nearly as many credits.

The degree to which the distortion and edge/corner softness you object to are present depends on the design and construction of the anamorphic adapter, and not simply on the fact that an adapter is used.

Note that the recent Zeiss Master Anamorphics do not have an adapter/prime design architecture. This might also arguably be true for the new Cooke anamorphics as well. But surely these two brands are not the only ones that qualify as "true" anamorphics. Also, the Angenieux zoom anamorphics are just a re-working of their existing spherical zooms with a rear anamorphic adapter. Accordingly, they don't even have some of the important anamorphic character that many people like, such as elliptical bokeh.

Those anamorphics are terrible in my opinion, they have bad pincushion distortion.
