F3: Is a Sony F3 worthwhile buying in 2015??

Sounds like a great deal! I think the v-mount on the back will make it pretty well balanced with the tilta baseplate.

the ImpulZ luts can be applied in all major programs. Either as regular lut.cube or installed in resolve or final cut. Im currently using them straight in premiere and speedgrade. They come in different flavours so if you want fast you can use the Film Contrast version and then just do a quick exposure/contrast adjustment. You should check out their site for more info I think.

It is! Crazy good deal, can hardly believe it myself :-D

But boy oh boy, going to have to spend quite a bit more now on upgrading things. Just realised my tripod (Fancier FC-270A) won't handle a rigged up Sony F3, and I think the next step up for a tripod would cost about $1k-ish? Nearly as much as the camera itself cost me!

I think this is the best tripod on a budget that I should get for a Sony F3 rig:

I agree the v-mount on the back will make it absolutely perfect for shoulder shooting and on a tripod, very happy about having that! Although, monopod shooting is my preferred style! :-D

Any ideas for frugal monopods which can comfortably hold 8kg? I've seen a few with max load of 8kg, but I'd rather have a bit of headroom to be on the safe side. So perhaps one rated for 10kg.

Edit: Although hmmm.... Maybe I'm way off with the calculations: 2 and a half kilos for the body plus perhaps a kilo for all the rigging stuff, 500gm for monitor/recorder, 1kg for a lens.... equals 5kg. So perhaps it could be easily kept under 5kg. (if I drop the V mount battery usage just for when I go monopod style instead)

I have the Miller SOLO DV 20 tripod. Its about perfect for my f3 but I dont run V-lock. I just have another battery adapter on the side. I have used a manfrotto monopod with it but it was not ideal. For a cam that size I think shoulder and tripod is generally better.

Well it came also with 2x 32gig SxS, a fantastic Tilta baseplate, top plate, lightweight dovetail, and V mount battery plate, so when you consider what all of that is worth and subtract it out, I'd say I got the actual F3 (which includes the paid update for 444 10bit s log) for similar amounts, or even less, as people are still paying for a used Canon 5Dmk2.

That's pretty insane. I'm still seeing clean examples go for about $3000.

Dont forget lens and v-lock. I think u will hit 8-10kg

Doubt 10kg.... I am only using light-ish DSLR lenses on it. The heaviest lens I own that I'd use on it is a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 for Nikon F.
I'd estimated 8kg before as my rough max weight I think I'd end up at, but I think I overestimated it perhaps. Plus I suspect my normal average weight will be down around 5kg?

Not sure, guess I'll need to wait and see how things work out when all the bits and pieces arrive and I build it up. And then actually start shooting with it for real!

So I'll hold off on replacing my Fancier FC-270A tripod just yet, hopefully it will cope. But if not..... I'm looking at getting this one:

Sub US$3k I reckon is easy to find with a bit of effort and patience, but yeah, is crazy I paid less than half that! :-o
It is a well used copy however, shot a lot of docos, has over 1400hrs on it. But I don't mind that.

Very interesting threat. I also happen to own an Odyssey 7Q, PL glass and I'm just starting to look at 1080P options. In the past I've owned FS100, FS700 shooting RAW and others.

Cheap is good as long as clients accept 1080P.

klk, if you're happy with s-log 10bit 444 (or 422 in my case, as I'll use the cheap BMD VA) 1080p 60fps quality or less, with great lowlight (but not stupidly insane high ISO like the A7s) and don't mind the extra weight and lack of autofocus, then I don't believe it is possible to find a better bargain! Especially if you hunt hard and snap up a bargain at well under $2k like I did.

1080p still has legs in it for a few more years yet, and otherwise I can rent if need be.

Only benefits others will give you is smaller weight such as an A7s (but at expense of ergonomics, and other areas), or flashy stuff such as 4K / slow motion / raw.

I'm quite pleased with my purchase, even though it means I'll need to spend more than the camera itself just on upgrading my monopod and tripod to handle the extra weight! Ah well, it will be worth it as these items can always transition across to my next big camera such as an URSA Mini or maybe maybe in the distant future even an Arri Alexa Mini ;-) Also means I won't need to rent those items when shooting with other cameras that are not mine such as a RED One. (F3 is a better camera in my eyes however, but you don't always get to shoot with the one you choose)

I've almost completed my initial kit out for now. The last remaining items I still need to decide on buying is: a second dovetail (one for the tripod, one for the monopod. The camera already came with one dovetail), a fluid head for the monopod that can handle 10kg or more, and maybe a tripod (as I expect my current one won't quite handle the full set up).

Haven't looked enough into which fluid head, so still quite clueless as what to get! I'd appreciate any suggestions? Am considering a couple already, but they're only capable to a max 8kg payload, which I suspect in a worse case scenario could come up a couple of kilos short.

I'm looking at one of these dovetails:

This is the tripod I'm considering:

Is there more than one standard for these dovetails??? :-/ I had guessed there was only the Arri standard dovetail.

As I ordered this (which is Arri standard):
http://www.proaimshop.com/pas/CAMTR...With-Dovetail-Tripod-Plate-ARRi-Standard.html

I've attached an image of my camera, with its baseplate and dovetail that it came with (TILTA LSW baseplate).

I can't seem to find online the specific "TILTA LSW Baseplate" which I own (that is the words on the side of it).
Guessing it is a bit older model which is not being sold anywhere.
As far as I can tell by looking over Tilta's current products they make two kinds of dovetails:
Arri standard and Sony VCT-U14.
Unless... is "Lightweight Standard" a third standard for dovetails? I'm unfortunately suspecting it is!

Although that doesn't make sense:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/992650-REG/ikan_tt_c07_12_2060_2575_120ex_dovetail_plate.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/992649-REG/ikan_tt_c16_10_lightweight_dovetail_plate.html

They're both called "lightweight", yet the 1st one doesn't work with mine (I know as I have an "Arri Standard" dovetail which doesn't work, unless... "Lightweight Arri Standard" is something specific and different to "Arri Standard". While the second one looks like it is identical to the one which came with my camera, and is what I'm seeking a second one of)

Is Tilta with their 15mm baseplates using their own made up "standard"??

For a cheap decent tripod look at the benro h8 or h10.

actually preferred them to my manfrotto 509hd with a tricked out Red scarlet.
