Is a firmware hack possible?

It is well known that the EOS 5D2 had some firmware hacks that allowed extra control and added new features on the camera.

As one can see from the this project, some Canon digicams can have the video bitrate changed. It would be nice to have something similar done to the GH1....

Can we put a sticky or something that says
"A firmware Hack would mean a re-implementation of the codec used on the gh-1. This is a non-trivial task first of all and secondly, unless you use an open source codec ( which I highly doubt would perform better on Panasonic's hardware ) there are myriad licensing and legal issues with this as well.

And besides, the GH-1 is a great camera. What are you complaining about?"

To be fair, most people here just want a higher bit rate rather than a better compression algorithm.

each time someone mentions a gh1 hack, an angel dies. you don't want to be responsible for an angel dying do you?
To be a bit more positive and just to throw a carrot out there, I'd prefer to believe that every time there is a camera hack an angel gets it's wings

true but I'm operating under the assumption that the engineers at Panasonic have optimized the camera already and in order for the hardware to handle this a better compression algorithm would be needed.

I don't see why a higher bit rate wouldn't help the existing algorithm. And I don't see how implementing a higher bit rate via firmware hack would be difficult to do... unless the camera uses a hardware codec whose parameters can't be changed by software.
