Is a 1 TB RAID drive big enough?

I have a 2.5 TB G-Tech GRAID Pro on order, they will be shipping next week.

I'm wondering if, instead of a 2.5TB drive, a 1 TB drive is enough?

I'm planning on shooting a 90 minute feature later this year and I'm immediately starting a documentary shot in 1080 and I'll be doing with a 3 camera shoot of a two hour event so my footage is going to add up, but I'm storing the documentary footage on another drive until more pieces of the film are shot.

What do you think? To me I fear that the bigger the better, but I wouldn't mind paying half as much for a smaller array.

2.5 tb is the safer bet. The main problem is not the feature, but the Documentary. the way I shoot documentary, the Camera is rolling almost all the time, and I only make cut decisions in the editing phase. I structure everything when editing.AS for the feature, I believe that 90 minutes of 1080p would be 90gb for the raw material, plus 90 in a optimal scenario for only two takes per shot (very doubtable). In the documentary perspoective, it would be at least about 90x the time of the lengh of the documentary in footage... (EDIT- Sorry BigMike, Its just late and I'm too tired. I had to edit this to make sense...)

Anyway, Witrh a 2.5TB, you don't have to worry about storage issues... With the 1TB you shouldn't also, but there's the possibility... If you can afford it, definetly go for the bigger one. Its always an investment that you are going to use

Do you plan to shoot more than a thousand minutes of 1080? I mean, there's no mystery to drive size... you need enough to store what you shot and want to use.

Also, don't forget, there are different styles of RAID. If you're running a fully-mirrored RAID, you may have a lot less actual available space than you think (like half).

Does anyone have any experience with the regular G-Drives? Or the G-Drive Quad. (Not the G-RAID).

I'm trying to buy one today in LA but can't track one down. I guess I have to order online.

It's a 2.5 Tb or 1.25 RAID 3, actual storage space is either 2TB oe 1TB.

I don't want to spend the 4 grand for the 2.5, but I'm thinking in the long run I'll be happier.

Where is a good place to buy the G-Raid drives?

The apple store seems a little pricey. I would like to try their drives. I had a bad experience with La Cie (power supply, solder point came undone, Lc cie would not support it...turns out this seems to happen a lot.) And I have a custom drive from Melrose mac...but they don't make larger then 400gb at this point, love the drive though.)

I just used a G-Raid on my last job and I liked it a lot.

G-tech GRAID Pro is about 2,000 for a 1.25 TB and about 3,700 for a 2.5 TB.

They start shipping next week. I don't have the web address at this time.

they were started by Medea, who I have used for years and have been very happy with their support. BTW: Medea was just purchased by Avid.

I've got a G-tech GRAID 500 Gig drive, which I filled with uncompressed dv footage with one project. I'm afraid I'll do the same with HD once I start doing effects.

Yeah, I'm thinking I ought to go ahead and buy the bigger drive. Yup.

Thanks for the input.

By the way: Rush once posted instructions on making your own RAID array. Maybe someone can point us in the direction of that article or Rush can repost it.

That would be a big help to us all... Anyone has a link?
