Is 720/24PN considered HD??

Shooting in the 720/24PN mode gives you the frame size of 980x720 (I think), but true HD is the 1080i mode. From what I hear, this is the mode that a lot of people are shooting in, as am I. If 720x480 is SD and 1080 is HD, what is this 980 mode called?

Also, why can't we adjust the frame rates in the 1080i mode? Or am I doing something wrong? I'm only able to adjust the frame rate in 720 mode.

thanks,
epp

As far as I understand there is no true HD. There is 1080 and 720 (for example different channels on my TV broadcast differently).

So yes, 720 is a valid HD format.

p.s. Let's not even get into the P and I debate. :)

As I understand it, the actual "spec" for "HD" came from a consotium of manufacturers(?) who agreed on the spec for the purposes of standardization (in terms of manufacturing equipment to play HDTV). In that spec, there are two resolutions for "HDTV" --- 720 and 1080. Both are 16:9, but I'm not sure about the "p" part of the spec --- if I remember correctly, the 720 spec is only progressive, but the 1080 spec can be either interlaced or progressive. However, I'm not absolutely certain of any of this, it's just what I remember from reading about it. Can I get a witness? Anyone?

There are people who say, "If it's not 1080, it's not TRUE HD!!!"
Wow, we wouldn't want any of that fake HD would we??? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Any resolution above SD is considered HD. So 720 is HD and is the only HD mode you can shoot at 60p. 1080 offers 60i and 30p, but not 60p.

I consider 720 to be the sweet spot for the HVX, but that's only my feelings and others may feel differently. With 720 you can shoot at 60p (maximum progressive frame rate), 30p (doulbe the time of 720,60p or 1080), or 24p (2.5x the time of 720,60p or 1080).
