is 6db gain on dvx100b "clean"?

i have a shoot coming up where the speaker will be in a living room setting.

the client has been asked me to use a minimal amount of lighting instruments.

i have some ideas how to shoot this with my dvx100b.

(small chimera 650 + lowel pro + inkie all bounced to ceiling)

the footage is going to the web so the dvx100b is the "fastest" 1/3chip camera available to me.

but just in case i need more light, is 6db gain on dvx100b "clean"?

thanks in advance to those in the know.

be well

no amount of gain is "clean" per say...its all amplifying the signal going to the ccd's.

I'd run a test before I depended on it. Rule of thumb is to never touch gain if you can help it.

I've had some good luck with the Denoiser plug-in from Red Giant. My Nikon's can get a bit noisy in very dark outdoor shots, and it's helped a lot to take some noise out when I need to. That may be of assistance to you as well

Personnaly, 6dB is risky. May I suggest to use the lowest shutter speed if don't have much motion in your shooting? I saw that your client wants a minimal lightning instruments, but why not using some white Chinesse Ball to light your scene instead? It doesn't consume that much.

And what do you mean "the footage is going to the web so the dvx100b is the "fastest" 1/3chip camera available to me." The DVX100 makes that much difference?

thanks for sharing your thoughts.

the client can live w/minimal instruments.

they will not let me "re-decorate".

i do find the dvx100b to be at least 1-1.5 stops faster than most 1/3" chip hd cameras.

again, thanks.

6db is very much within the point at which you will begin seeing noise. Fortunately, what you or I consider unacceptably noisy, is very much passable to many consumers. I am not saying this is how you should view every situation. You should always strive for the best quality possible. But if you are limited in the ways you can light the scene, this is probably the best route to take.

Make it clear ahead of time that it is your professional opinion that additional lighting should be used. If the client still denies you the right to use lights, you've done all you can do.

Is this speaker moving around a lot? If he is at a podium, a 50W light (I use a Lowel iLight) placed closely and above the speaker (on a high stand or on the ceiling) will not be intrusive and will light things nicely.

6db to me had always been noisy when the scene drops off into black. I'd give the client an example. If they are ok with it, run with it

awbacon is right, if the client is ok with it, go for it. I got in a production which I didn't have a choice to shoot with a 6dB gain. But it was on a HD device and it wasn't noisy at all. You should run some tests between SD and HD devices.
