Is 4.2.2 Color Lost When Using FireWire?

I've been doing a ton of research about the HVX200 before we buy, and was told from another knowledgeable user that when you transfer via FireWire, your color space goes back down to 4.1.1. Is this true? If so how is that possible?

Is this a way for Panasonic to enusre sales of the pricey P2 cards? I was thinking to use the FireStore device instead.

Enlighten me please.

That is definitely NOT true.

The camera will output all formats via firewire, including DVXPro50 and DVCProHD - both of which are 4:2:2 formats. You'll be fine with a firestore.

I'd look into the Cineporter as well. Personally I think it's looking like a more interesting product.

Apparently your ton of research has failed you.
Why would your color space change from a
data transfer?

People continue to confuse firewire with DV, thinking that firewire and DV are synonomous. They're not. One need only look at HDV to see that very different type of data can be transferred on that cable.

If your friend were thinking that you somehow had to downrez to DV, then yes the 4:1:1 color sampling would come into play. But there's no reason to do that -- you can transfer DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD across firewire just fine, retaining the full integrity of the signal.
