GH2 Is 24p Appropriate for Broadcast music videos?

Going to be shooting a music video in a few days, would love to shoot in 24p with my hacked gh2 but am not sure if it's the best way to go...the artist wants to submit it to MTV Canada so would there be any issues shooting in 24p if it's intended for broadcast? or: should I just play it safe with 29.97>?

What format you want to shoot is one thing, what format is needed for broadcast is another. I shoot everything in 24p. For broadcast you will have to do a tape out to at least digibeta, HDCAM or both. Whatever facility you go to do this should be able to output from a 24p quicktime file to tape at the appropriate framerate, in this case 29.97. Just be advised it will be expensive either way. Also make sure to find out if you need it closed captioned.

Thanks, I believe it's digibeta from what i've been told. The artist will incur those expenses but what exactly is "expensive" for a digibeta transfer for a 5 min video?

Tape stock and studio time. Cheapest I've come across about $200 an hour and usually 1 hour minimum charge. That'll get me a couple copies on both formats. And if you need closed captioning you gotta do the transfer first, then send the tape out to somewhere like CaptionMax ($400) and then make copies of that CC Master. MTV and BET in the US won't accept a video that isn't CCed. So yeah, you're looking at a good $600-$700 to get a video prepared for broadcast, even more if you need to convert to PAL for a European release. I learned all this the hard way and got in trouble with clients when I needed to tack on extra charges I didn't tell them about. Had to go half way on it once. Make sure people are aware of this stuff.

ya it looks like the same thing here, which is pretty crazy because who needs closed captioning on a music video.

Deaf people? People that wanna know what the actual lyrics to a song are? And people that don't wanna get sued by the first group if CC isn't there for them?
