IRND or not to IRND?

So I'm comparing whether or not to get a set of Tiffen IRND's, or just getting a Tiffen T1 and regular set of ND's, or possibly even a variable ND?
What do you guys think? Pro's/Cons?

Regular ND introduces so much IR once you get into the high densities. Tiffen IRND make everything go green. Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND's are awesome, completely colour neutral, grab some of those.

Are these filters you use personally? These firecrest ND's seem come in varieties, which ones specifically do you have and use?

Intetesting; I wasnt aware of the built in IR on the sensor. From what I read the Tiffen IRND's are specifically made for the F35, but not the 'hot mirror' variety, which are made for Red etc.. That's why I was thinking to go with the Tiffen ones. That article seemed to make the case for this as well.
My dillemma is if using a separate IR solution combined with ND's both By Tiffen would have the same effect as the premade IRND's. It would save a little money if this were true... The article suggests that the doubling of ND filters may have no effect, which I didn't know. But it didn't say anything about combining a ND with a separate IR like the T1? Has anyone tried this?

It has a very good IR filter built in that starts working at 700nm and has full cutting power by 750nm so it is really only sensitive to far red contamination with this range. I too am looking into picking up some IRND's as well and have been looking into it for the last week or so. The Firecrest appears to be a good option as it appears to cut in the 700-750nm range the F35 is sensitive to.

The article I linked to above, talks about the T1 being essential to the F35 for cutting far red contamination. Does the Firecrest also cut far red at 680nm? I love my blacks! Does anyone have any tests they can share?

I grabbed the firecrest ND's 4 x 5.64 filters they are great can't recommend them enough for use with the F35. Here is a test on the youtubes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AsJ5PQSKOQ

Here are two random stills from some amazing footage of the camera being left recording whilst walking around set. ND 1.2 was in the matte box I believe

There is no unnatural colour shift to my eyes (besides the F35 being warm in general)

Very nice! In the youtube test there is a perceivable green shift when the filter is added. It's very slight, and if i wasn't shown a before and after shot with the filter I probably wouldnt have been able to tell the difference, VERY nice filters. I'll see if my budget allows for them. Thanks again for the reccommendation!

I took a chance on the LIPA Pro Indie 4x4 IR ND filters and am blown away by their performance. They are basically a chinese knockoff of the Tiffen IR ND's and made of Water White glass. Sharp with anti-reflective coatings. Like the Tiffen, they are slightly green but are easily white balanced to be perfectly neutral. I've also shot without white balance and they were easy to correct. Right now, the price is the cheapest I've ever seen them. Here is something I shot recently on the GH4 and Rokinon 85mm Cine lens with the LIPA ND 1.2 and LIPA CP-L.

Thanks for that rec- hard to pass up as an experiment for that price. At least I could cover my sony 20mm now and/or not mess with my circular tiffens any longer.
That GH4 image looks great, btw. External recorder? V-log?

Just plain old CINE D internal at Cinema 4k (0, -3, -5, 0, 0)

I've also just picked up a full set of the Firecrest NDs (0.3-3.0) and Grads (0.6-1.2). A hefty investment, but wow! What an improvement over conventional IRNDs. Worth every penny IMO, especially the grads, which become much easier to use when you don't have to contend with colourshifts across your frame.

Highly, highly recommended.

So here come my tests, I'm experiencing weird stuff on these tests, that's why I made them 3 times, just to be sure.

From left to right:
No ND, IRND 0.3, IRND 0.6, IRND 1.2, IRND 1.8, IRND 2.1

The IRND 1.8 and 1.2 are brand new. The rest are about 3 years old.
You can see how the filters shift color a bit, but what's really wrong is how the 1.8 and 2.1 are really not as strong as they should, they're around 3/4 of a stop lighter than they should. Time to get in touch with Tiffen tech support?

Hi all,

didn't want to start a new thread for this. Are there any other IR-Cut filters you would recommend?
I have some regular ND's and it would be handy for small projects to be able to use them.
I saw the Tiffen T1 mentioned.
Are there any other IR-Cut filters you would recommend? Any cheap options? It can even be screw-on.

(Normally I rent IRND's)
