Iris Wheel Cleaning

I'm having the same issue others have reported... an onery iris wheel that suddenly closes the iris when making minor adjustments. Has anyone had any luck cleaning the iris wheel? If so... details please!
 
I have a similar issue but when i make minor adjustments on my iris wheel the iris opens suddenly instead of closing (probably due to how i set the wheel up in the menu though) Anybody know a way to fix this?
 
I read in another thread that someone had success simply leaving the camera on (with no tape) in the manual iris mode for a long period of time. The theory being that it had something to do with a problematic component (capacitor?) and that running the camera for a couple of days solved the problem for him. I've also read suggestions to clean the iris wheel but would like to hear from someone who has actually done it successfully... what product they used, etc. I'd like to try these possible fixes before sending the camera in for repair.
