Iris or shutter?.. I'm confused!

Hi,

I recently got a DVX100BE and have been experimenting a bit.

I think I understand how the Iris, ND-filter, and gain works. What I don't understand is shutter speed settings? I see they affect lightning pretty much, but what's the difference of setting iris and shutter, and what should I use?

Lighting and shutter can give a huge variety of different results. I would follow CineAlta's advice of getting Barry's book, but here is my 2 cents.

Shutter is traditionally defined as how long light is allowed to hit the film (frame) until it advances to the next. This goes hand in hand with exposure because the longer the shutter speed the less light you need to expose. A shorter shutter will result in the need of more light.

Practice combining diff. shutters with diff exposures and see what kind of footage it creates. That's the best way to learn...figure out how one affects the other.

Good luck!

Shutter speed: If it is high, it reduces motion blur. If it is low, it increases motion blur. I shoot with high shutter speed when shooting action scenes, to maintain more fluid motion. It's also better for slow motion.
