Not sure if this is the correct forum but I need some assistance with my setup here. Using the irig pre to try and boost my gain on my rode videomic with my t2i, but haven't been able to get it to work at all.

Took this video to showcase my setup and issues -> http://youtu.be/74PIlG_QuZg

Thanks for any assistance.

Wow... that is a mess of adapters. I know the iRig Pre seems like a great, cheap solution, but the necessary assortment of adapters and cables just to get it to work is a major turnoff for me.

First, the wiring for the Headset Buddy assigns the mic output to your camera as the red connector, and the headset return to the iRig as the green. In your (very difficult to watch because it is all over the place) video, you have the green plugged into your camera. You should be using the red, assuming this chain will work in the first place.

Second, your camera's analog input gain is cranked to 32dB... that's going to do nothing but amplify noise, and if you have to have it up that far to make this work then you aren't gaining anything with this setup. Use the analog gain as a last resort. I'd suggest bringing that back down to 0dB for now.

Now, for the obvious piece that may sound like a stupid question: do you have the gain turned up on the side of the iRig Pre?

I've searched around and cannot find much in the way of user guides for the iRig Pre, but from what I can tell the headphone out on the Pre does not have an option to listen straight from the mic, only from the return from the camera or iOS device, so there's no way to check your gain (or presence of any signal at all) before the camera. But check the gain on the side of the Pre.

UPDATE:

Alex fixed the problem. You need to insert the RED cable into the camera and make sure the gain is turned all the way up. Seems like a simple mistake but it is very common. Thanks Alex!
