Ipod Video/photo for storage?

I remember a presentation when a Panasonic rep was dumping the P2 files directly to an Apple Ipod. Is this possible? What type of jack comes out of the hvx? The big firewire port or the small one like the dvx?

I own a 60 gb Ipod Photo, and am thinking of purchasing a 60gb Ipod Video (imagine showing your work to your clients in a coffee shop, instantly, just to impress :)

I'm probably asking too much to have the Dvcprohd footage immediately viewable after dumping them on the machine, but at least it seems to make sense that we can use the Ipods as portable Hdd's... Am I wrong?

it's funny how everytime apple intros a new ipod (every other week) someone comes along and asks about streaming hvx200 video to it. ipod is great but there are so many other players that are more capable. seems silly to build a $6000 hd video capture system around a $300 consumer device.

iPod and HVX

iPod and HVX

The iPod video only plays video clips of 320x240 pixels, compressed with MPEG4.
As the HVX200 does not sport that specific format, there will be no way to play video recorded with the HVX natively on an iPod video. It will be possible, however, to transcode clips recorded with the HVX in whichever format with a Powerbook or a G5 into the "iPod format". Apart from that it will also be possible to dump data from the P2 cards onto the iPod video hard disc via the USB connection. No streaming video, though.

As the iPod video does not play HVX video natively, it remains to be discussed if that specific model really makes sense just for use a a hard disc "on the go", to archive HVX material temporarily -- any other iPod with a USB port would do as well.

Hope this helps, Pe.

I know the Ipod video specifications. However, I'm talking about using the Ipod to Empty my full P2 card. The Ipod is a mobile Hard Drive that is battery powered. I want to know if I can plug the HVX to it without a Laptop, and dump the information to it. Not while I'm filming, but when I stoped filming, for example: I finish a shot, everyone takes a break, I connect the camera to the Ipod and presto- file transfer. Is this possible?

I heard somewhere that you will be able to dump P2 footage directly from the HVX to a Hard Drive. However, you will not be able to stream footage to the Hard Drive. So theoretically I suppose it would be possible to unload footage to any ipod...old and new. It doesn't really matter. if it is the new video ipod or not. Technically you could dump the contents of a 4gb P2 to an ipod mini if you wanted to.

I recall hearing that there was a USB port on the HVX, but I'm not sure. You may want to search these boards.

Considering the speed of the ipod HD is around 5400 it would be a little slow going uploading that footage. But I think it would work. I definitely wouldn't try editing from an ipod like a firestore.

Honestly those ipods are fairly sturdy, if it works I would definitely consider it for the HVX200.

That's what I was thinking... The Ipod is extremely portable, and looks good. With the release of the Ipod Video, I believe that probably old Ipod photos will cost less... That's dumping P2 footage with style :)

Hmmm, iPods are only $300-$400. Wouldn't it be cool to have a similar sized divice that could not only be recorded to through firewire but also have a built-in LCD monitor? I'd pay $600 for a 60-80 gig one. Then you'd have your instant play-back of clips like listening to songs on an iPod since it records in a non-linear format already. It probably wouldn't sell enough units to have a $600 price tag so I'll keep dreaming (the P2 monitored hard disk). . . they could even make it compatiple with I-tunes for the lower-res video downloads, how hard could it be?

That would be nice, but when you're shooting you don't really have time to go over footage. Time is money, and for low budget filmakers, the term is even more relevant.

I would just be happy if the ipod was a reliable portable temporary storage solution

I hate how Apple has jipped everyone by eliminating firewire ports on the new ipods. Don't know when this happened. I have a 3rd generation and the thing still has a firewire capablities thank god.

I bought an Ipod recently (Photo), and while it didn't come with the firewire cable, it works with it. Can the firewire cable be used on the new Ipod video? The connection jack seems to be the same...

They remove firewire capability completely in the newer models to save space inside to make it really thin. I was upset too, but when you think about it...who cares? USB2 and firewire have pretty much the same speed for transfering stuff like music and video/photos. The only people that get screwed the people that only have an old Mac that has firewire but no USB2. And just about every PC that came out with firewire already had a USB2 in it.

Firewire is what is necessary for the camera to be able to offload to. So if you have an ipod with firewire, yes you could use it to offload the P2 card. If your ipod doesn't have firewire, then it can't be used for offloading purposes.

Are you sure, Jester? Seems to me that the connection cable is the same as the one of my Ipod Photo... Can you show me a link to this particular information? If this is indeed true, than this makes me a very happy Ipod Photo owner, and seriously makes me consider other options in therms of portable video...Like that french device everyone is talking about...

Don't they make adapter cables for the ipod? Like a USB2 -> Firewire

That's just silly gadget snobbery. The iPod is essentially a hard drive... that's the point. If you want to talk about "silly," talk about the cost difference between 16 gigs of P2 cards versus 60 gigs of hard drive space. If I could dump data on one or the other, I think the choice is obvious.
