iPod as external drive for SD 702T?

I've got an old 40GB firewire iPod that I would like to use as an external drive for my SD 702T. But even if the iPod was initialized by iTunes under Windows, the 702t want's to reformat it as soon as it gets connected. The reformatted iPod works nicely as an external HD, but I can't even turn it off anymore and have to re-initialize it from iTunes to get it back to work as expected. Has anybody gotten such a setup to run?

When the iPod debuted there was a lot of talk about using them as small, portable drives. The industry press at the time had several articles mentioning that the iPod isn't a good fit for this; something along the lines of them being designed for the drive to run in little fits & starts, dumping audio into RAM, and that the constant-run of data-drive use would quickly burn the thing out. This wasn't someone guessing on a blog or anything, but articles in MacWorld, etc.

As for your powering-off issue, all the iPods I've used don't have a dedicated power switch; on mine, you hold the "forward" button down for a few seconds to turn it off, so it's a software or firmware deal. Re-formatting it may remove the various switch abilities. (Remember, they're designed to power down almost completely at rest, and most people just leave them on all the time, and use the "stop" or pause button).

Hope that helps... a little...
