iPhone app for Warm Cards

That is a great Idea. I don't have an Iphone but I have new Touch. I'm assuming I can use it with that. 5 bucks. It's worth a shot.

I just bought it, but it says to put your camera into a preset mode like Daylight, Florescent or Tungsten, start the app with a particular setting then do a white balance. I just bought this app, but if your camera is in a preset mode you cant do a white balance. And the EX1 has a preset that you pre-program (mine is at 5600), but you can't do a WB when it's in the preset mode. So I don't get it...

Thats for stills. Becasue it is a stills and video app. Its says for video to put it in auto. Right below its says to use the presets. Obviously for stills if it just told you to put it in auto for video.

The app is great works perfectly.

Just remember that the color temp is from the iphone not the true color temp light you'd balance to using a real white card.

Hello my name is Billy Stewart, the developer for the Warm Cards app for the iphone. I built the app because I wanted to have a quick way to white balance my camera other than preset to warm up my skin tones when on location other than the traditional way of white balancing. I found that when I was shooting with different cameras and white balance using a white card sitting where your subject would be sometimes the white just did not look right. I would switch from preset to the white balance and I wasn’t happy. So I started using the old warm card system and sometimes it was just a little too warm or too cool. So I came up with a way to use the iphone as a source to white balance the camera to give me the ability to have another "look" that would be consistent each time I shot. It gives cameramen/DP a choice of white balances other than preset and reflected light. This is not the answer to every white balancing issue or color matching problem but it is another tool to use to give your shoots a "look" that you may be happy with. The way it works. In older cameras you would choose the filter wheel or setting for the color temp you are shooting under. Ex: filter 1=3200K filter 2=5600K. The iphone and itouch display light source is roughly a daylight color temp. So to get 3200 I had to use colors that would convert it, like using a piece of CTO on an HMI. After about month of testing different video cameras and DSLR’s these are the colors I liked best. I will be continuing to tweak and add colors to increase the options I have in my tool box "iphone" so any suggestions are welcome.

Visibility of the iPhone screen outdoors (or any video screen for that matter in bright sunlight) is not exactly ideal. The Vortex Media warmcards have matte surfaces for this very reason. I guess you could go indoors, whitebalance on the screen and then go outside.

But I don't know...something for owners of the app to test and report back on, eh?
