IPhone 6 super 8 style camera

Has anyone seen this? I didn't find a thread on it. Anyway this floated into my inbox via no film school, looks pretty neat for what it is. Not sure if it is optically coupling to the phone camera, or if it is using a separate camera behind the lens and just using the phone as a recorder.

This is the only time I wish I had an iPhone. It also immediately set me to thinking what it would take to gut an 8mm camera with lens turret, and place an HD webcam and raspberry pie inside to create a similar lowfi video recording device. Need to check the imager dimension for the pie camera and think about it a little.

Digging a little deeper, and it seems like there is video input and output via the connector on the phone (audio too) so the eyepiece is a small display, and this probably uses some kind of separate imager. This will be great until Apple buys the company, or decides it needs to be licensed and closes the software interface for non-authorized devices.

It is a really neat idea, something that could be implemented on some of the Android devices. But since those devices are such a mixed bag, not likely to happen. Android supports USB cameras and audio, but these often get cut out of the final code.

And the raspberry pie camera is about half the size of an 8mm frame, so the crop will kill the lens selection. Need a bigger imager. I wonder if a BeagleBone Black might have enough power to build something with a USB webcam.

No 6+, disappointing as it has more video features. Since this one hit full funding so quickly, hopefully they'll do another campaign soon for the larger phone.

Considering that it uses a different sensor, the ois would not be used. I'm sure the reason to exclude the + is size. I wouldn't rule out the possibility down the road, but by then Apple will have moved on to the 7 and your customer base will be mad because of the changes made to the phone render their camera device useless. I would hope Apple sticks to some common specs. but you never can count on it from year to year.

Very cool. Indie film makers should get one of these and make movies. Skip all the high end equipment. You don't need it.

The upcoming iPhone (slated for release in 2016) is rumored to have a dual-sensor/dual-lens (with two different focal lengths) camera, with the interpolation that is designed to deliver an in-focus image both live and/or in post.

As to this camera, it's an overkill, IMO. Cute idea but the one that won't survive the front lines.

I don't think it uses a separate sensor. The lens is most likely re-angled using a prism. Same thing with the viewfinder — it's just a small part of the iphone screen with a prism to periscope it out the back.

If that's all they are really doing, then its junk. Guess we will see what happens when it really hits the streets.

if you scroll down the page they discuss the iPhone 6 Plus version.

Asked on their Facebook page if they planned a 6+ version and its now a part of the campaign. Here's the response:

We have released a tier on the Kickstarter that enables iPhone 6+ users to make a down payment of $15 towards the 6+ version and be the first to know when it launches. Thanks!
