iPad Production Apps - What do you guys use?

Hey everyone,

Jumping into my first iPad (just pre-ordered it) after being an iPhone user for a little under a year - wondering what my fellow film professionals are using on their iPads? I produce mainly, so I'm more looking for productivity/project management type apps but open to all of it! Google searches yield results from 2 years ago...surely we've had a breakthrough in that time frame for film production?

Thanks!

Kegan

I saw a scripty app one for Ipad I thought was tres cool. Can't remember the name of it though (I don't have an iPad). But they were able to put in all applicable notes. Lens, length of take, audio issues, director notes. And what the coverage was based on script for each take/angle "lining" the script in the process.

Costly, but Movie Slate is awesome, Easy Release is good to have, there's a nice Technicolor app for media record times (might be iPhone only though, but you can still run it), Pages and Dropbox are handy for docs, Teleprompt+ is great if you want to use your iPad for that purpose (I have on a paid gig and it worked really well with the Promoter People setup).

My one complaint about the Movie Slate... and given the 'display technology' there's not much one can do about it... it doesn't do too well in bright sun light...

But like any slating technology... consistent use is the key to its benefit...

I use the Toland and pCam apps for the iPhone... never tried them on the iPad... but the one new thing I got was the Hollywood Cameraworks shot design widget,

http://www.hollywoodcamerawork.us/sd_index.html

Which unfortunately 1) haven't had any time to play with other than start it up once... 2) don't have a current project to use it on to give a 'battlefield' report...

Yes, unfortunately, that is a huge drawback...but like you said, it's due to the iPad display.

Sounds interesting. I'll take a look at that one myself.

Here is the list of apps I use on my iPad that related to filmmaking.
Producer HD must have for pre production
CinemaForms Must have for all the times, especially if you get extended package. Pricy but worth it.
Callsheet Great call sheet app.
Final Draft writer Must have for screen writing
ScriptsPro good screen writing app, cheap.
StoryBoard awesome story board appl
MovieSlate MUST HAVE!!
ProPromter
IndexCard
Cinema Tools
Clinometer Great tool for leveling.
Sun Seeker Must have!
Kessler must have if you use Kessler gear and do timelapses.
Pcam Must have! You can find any tools you want there.

I have a good list for Iphone too if you want.

Awesome! Thanks so much guys. I was looking at Producer HD - the reviews weren't overwhelmingly great though. Perhaps they've really stepped it up in the newer versions. Definitely going to get CinemaForms as well.

Bring on the iPhone list too!

+1 dropbox
it acts like a filing system for iOS
I put a project name on a folder and keep jpegs, pdfs, scripts, mpegs etc all together

edit:
hit the star to keep a local copy for when you don't have signal

Google Drive integrated with your Google Apps, I much prefer it to Dropbox.

Other apps worth checking out: Fade In, Magic Hour, simpleDOF.

A must have for production though, is Shot Lister.

Recently picked up a 3rd gen with a stock close out discount, primarily to use for prompting. Spending as much or more on a dedicated, less portable promoter LCD didn't seem sensible.

Apps thrown on first include:

Teleprompt+
Movie Slate
Photosynth (panoramas n such, location scout aid)
Evernote
Skype and FaceTime (integrate with prompter for digital remote Errol Morris Interrotron)
DropBox
iFiles (share files anywhere via Bluetooth - use iPhone to receive email attachments and send them quickly to a cheaper wifi ipad)
myLite (imperfect yet handy multicolored dimmable light pad - or use solid jpgs for same, but less elegantly)

Google Drive integrated with your Google Apps, I much prefer it to Dropbox.

Google Drive has one huge drawback - it forces you to use apple keychain which I cannot stand.

edit: plus google has enough of my online presence already. I feel safer with diversity - personal preference.

Great stuff - can't wait to start building my app collection and hopefully streamlining my productions in the field!

Look up "Shot Designer". Does exactly what the name suggests. Made by the awesome people at Hollywood Camerawork and has to be hands down one of the coolest apps in existence.

I've only used the iphone version but this seriously makes me want an ipad for more real estate. Fantastic app. But I'm a big fan of their camerawork DVDs too.

Interesting. I don't use Mac so I wouldn't know or be affected by this, but thanks for the info. I use Google Apps for my domain, and I like having that storage readily accessible through my web portal.

My wife just stumble on this yesterday, and is now using it for releases on field productions:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/type-on-pdf/id466280491?mt=8

She keeps a PDF of the comapny's talent release on the iPad, and it allows her to type in all the pertinent info, and allows both her and the talent to sign the release form.

It's not very useful on iPhone, but works very well on iPad.
