iPad, alternatives, PDF screenplays ...

I bought a netbook and set it up just the past couple of days, dual boot WinXP and Linux. Loving it for reading PDF screenplays, easier than holding a 2 lb pile of 110 pages, plus I can listen to the movie soundtrack while reading the script. :)

Talking with friend today how cool it would be to be reading PDF scripts on something like an iPad, so lightweight. But I won't be buying an ipad, foremost because it only lets you read, not edit, Google docs which I use heavily during script development. But I am pretty jazzed and hopeful at something better coming to replace the iPad that would appeal to me, e.g. see #10 on this list of alternatives to the ipad:

You mean #9... the Google tablet?

I didn't see the JooJoo listed: https://thejoojoo.com/

Yeah... I'm holding out for a full functioning tablet computer, not just an entertainment device, I have a iPod Touch for that now.

There won't be anything better than the iPad, haha. That's like hoping for something better than the iPod or the iPhone, they are the best of their classes, always will be. When advances come down the pipeline they'll be from Apple, and the iPad will include them.

I love my iPad though, it's definitely great. Read a screenplay on it the other day even.

Glad you enjoy your Pad!

Like I said...waiting for a full functional tablet computer. The iPad isn't the device for my purposes.

Oh... and I read screenplays on my RCA RocketBook too...that was new in 1999. Apple is never the first one to the party....

Well, in the news today-- Google just leapfrogged over Apple iphone in terms of market share, BIG TIME.

Give it a year, I expect Google can dominate the "ipad" market if they want to, and I wager Google is planning just that. :)

There's a beta of Final Draft coming out sometime soon on iPad. I signed up for it and hope to be in on the testing.

Big fan of my iPad here...posting on it right now...

read a little closer. it says Android phones have outsold iPhones for the first time last quarter, but still make up less than half the market share that the iPhone has... 9% vs 24%.

Well you hit on one big negative of my netbook-- I can't run my screenwriting software on it (Movie Magic) because MM requires a certain minimum screen resolution. That would become an issue when someday I decide on an ipad or googlePad or whatever. ipad is definitely very very cool, but then as I said it really blows that it does not allow editing of Google Documents, that would be very important to me, even moreso than running MM.

Interesting. I'm glad I read this...I was thinking about buying a cheap netbook just so I can write screenplays on the go (instead of lugging a laptop everywhere) using Movie Magic Screenwriter. Is this this all netbook models? Or could I find one to make this work?

MMS requires 1024x768 screen resolution or better. The problem with my netbook (and most) is that it only does 1024x600. There is the rub, that 600. Need 768 minimum. So I am screwed as far as running MMS on my netbook. Sort of makes me regret it a bit, but just a bit. I have a nice superthin lightweight subnotebook that I run MMS on; the netbook I knew going in was more for travel, movies and basic word processing and www while on the go as my greatest horror is being trapped on the tarmac for hours. A plane here in my city of Duluth MN was trapped on the tarmac for I think 10 hrs, another similar horror story in Rochester MN just a year or two ago; new laws just kicked in this past week though I think that will put a maximum of I think 3-4 hrs on a tarmac before airlines are fined $20,000 or so per passenger if they pull that game on weary passengers. Still, I would want a netbook for writing and watching movies with me on the plane to help kill that waiting time whatever it is.

Very helpful. Thanks.
