Iomega Super DVD 8x USB 2.0 External DVD+/-RW Driv

Has Anybody used or heard anything about the quality of the Iomega Super DVD 8x USB 2.0 External DVD+/-RW Drive?

Found one listed at:

(some good prices in general there for students and instructors who qualify, btw...)

Anyway, it claims to burn both DVDs and CDs. The editorial views at review sites seem reasonable. Would I be making a mistake to try to get both capabilities on one external drive? :-/

All dvd RW drives will burn CD's. This is definatly something you should expect from the drive. If it says that it doesn't burn cd's, there is something wrong. Most drives right now are also dual format (+/-) so that is also something to expect in a drive. Who knows which format will win the holy wars. Keep in mind that later this year dual layer drives will also be available, and from what i have heard, they shouldn't be to much more expensive than the current drives. Sounds like fun.

On the whole, Iomega has come out with many problematic DVD/CD burners. I'm not sure about this exact model, but I would go for a drive from a manufacturer with a better track record (i.e. Plextor, Sony, etc.).

Besides, I don't think there's much in the way of 8x blank media at this time. There are those who claim to be able to write 8x on a 4x blank disc, but all of the disc manufacturers say that you're risking serious problems if you try.

Verbatim is just around the corner from me; I have lunch with a few guys from there now and then, and that's the unanimous skinny.

Besides, I wouldn't trust an Iomega battery charger, let alone a DVD writer.
