Invisible Gun Tips

Can you say rethinking the wheel anyone?

Is it that hard to take a marker pen and just black it? Marker pen will just wash or even wipe right off.

I just bought a toy gun for a short this week and it has this orange tip. I plan to just paint it with marker pen. As long as I am not doing some extreme closeups of the gun, I don't think anyone will be the wiser.

I agree, It's like reinventing the wheel lol. PERMANENT MARKER is the way to go. Why trouble yourself with needless post work.

This is an interesting expansion on the idea. I have to wonder about how much detail on the gun you'd lose in the process, though. Have you tried this?
Like robot909 said above, buy Stu Maschwitz's book and see for yourself. I'm sure the same method can be used for a little tip as a whole gun.

Many parts of this book make me say "Hey why didnt I think of that?", other parts make me say "Hey I thought of that way before I read this book, this guy thinks just like me." Stu's choice of tools and methods mirror my own in so many ways. It has reaffirmed many of the choices I have made on my own.

FWIW,

I shoot BTS video on a lot of television series and features. The last shootout I was present for was for Prison Break, about a month ago. I spoke with the armorers for the show and they use resin guns except for scenes where the guns will be shot. Then they use real guns that basically have weak springs so that they will cycle correctly with 1/4 power blank loads.

As a gun owner, I think using Air Soft guns with the tip blacked would be smart, I agree, the airsoft guns look very real.

All the best,

Dan

i agree ...... also you could just take electrical tape and cover the orange part of the tip, use an exacto knife and you can get it perfect.

............... also everyone i have 13 real blank guns (real guns that shoot blanks) if you ever need to rent any. i live in maryland and i would travel to surounding cities for shoots. p.m. me.
:)

I have a question about the Airsoft guns. Mainly the spring-action guns.

In an upcoming movie project, I have a scene where a girl puts a pistol to her head and pulls the trigger. There is a CLICK -- but no shot. (The gun isn't loaded.) Would an Airsoft gun be realistic enough for that scene? It's a closeup. I can add the CLICK effect in post, but the action of the gun needs to look real.

Actually, it looks like the Airsoft guns are mainly automatics (in design.) A revolver would be best for this. Any good replica revolvers out there that aren't prohibitively expensive?

I'm new here, this post inspired me to register, a lot of good things on this forum, been reading for a while. But, to answer your question, you can get an airsoft gun with the firing pin, and you can actually pull it back and fire without any damage to yourself, i.e. you don't have to actually cock the gun. I have an airsoft 1911 and this is the case. Would look very real if you added the click, even though the sound it makes is a click aswell.

Second thing, I've researched some, and Minnesota does allow you to remove the orange tip, just because a while ago someone painted a real gun orange and the police didn't want to deal with it.

I would recommend searching to see if your state has an airsoft association, that should give you detailed information about laws and what not for using airsoft guns.

Just call your local police and tell them what you're up to and that you'd like to paint the tip black or remove it. I did that and they told me 'no prob.'

This is the best option. Don't mess with effects. Remove the tip, notify the local police where you are shooting your film with fake weapons. After the shoot, either put the weapons in prop storage or dispose of them.

If you are filming a legitimate film, have all the permits, and have alerted the police, you've got nothing to worry about. Legislation removing the tips obviously does not pertain to legitimate filming.

If you use guns, don't go cheap. Get permission! Unless you are filming entirely within your house and no one will see.

Prominent signs saying you are filming is a good idea if you can put them in out of shot. Even if you have all the permits, the message doesn't always get through to cops on the ground. So be prepared to drop your fake guns pronto if cops come screeching in!

And remember, interiors may have windows!

*** I'm sure you know, but blank firing guns are not safe to fire directly at people!

And definitely not pressed to someone's head! ***

I just filmed a scene involving a fake handgun at the courtyard of my apartments. I painted the tip black, went and visited the main office and gave them a written statement of what I would be doing, I made flyers saying what I was doing and put them at the door of every apartment touching the courtyard and then made a big sign that we posted in the courtyard during filming and had ZERO problems. As long as you take the proper precautions you should be fine.
