Invicem | FilmConvert, Abandoned House from the 70s and the GH2

Hello! I had the great pleasure to work as cinematographer on a short experimental sequence movie using the GH2. This also gave me a great opportunity to test my just purchased FilmConvert plugin for Adobe Premiere/AE.

For lenses I used the Voigtlander 25mm and a 1970s labeled Nikkor "Nippon Kogaku" 50mm 1.4 lens. As an additional note I really found FilmConvert helpful in creating a gritty 16mm look for the movie.. and I hope you enjoy it!

I really enjoyed that! I still can't decide if I want to purchase film convert or not. It's getting so popular so fast, but I'm not sure I can (personally) make use of investing in it.

How did you do the shot that was looking into the mirror at the end?

Hey Stranden,

Thanks for sharing. Would you be willing to post one without the film convert by chance?
I'd be interested in seeing it!

Thanks guys! Glad you enjoyed it!

If I were to give a mini-review on FilmConvert I would say: It is great, if you know how to work around its limitations. (Example of issue I encountered: The GH2 has little latitude in the highlights and moderate shadow latitude, Vision 5207/7207 stock has very much latitude in highlights and small shadow latitude. With FilmConvert this creates a very challenging curve for the shadows but makes a finer highlight rendition. So you must have in mind that you will sacrifice information in the shadow areas or alternatively work around it by lifting the shadows by various means.) It's a different story on RAW cameras with higher latitude such as RED and soon the Alexa!

The mirror shot and everything in the last scene was shot with a 7D, we used a Rokinon/Samyang 14mm 2.8 to create the capture a fake reflection from the mirror, where we comped two shots, foreground and background element together.

I can try to render an SD preview without FilmConvert, I will report back on it soon.

Here you go:

Still grain and colorista applied and resolution is bad, maybe I need to make a new export... but it gives a general idea of the colors without FilmConvert

How did you properly frame for the 2.35 aspect ratio?

I had 2.39.1 crop marks on my external monitor, could have added some small stripes to the GH2 monitor as well. I feel having the frame reference during recording is a must, I really love composing for wide aspect ratios not only can it add depth but more importantly: it can create distance! :)

Awesome. My type of video. Would be really awesome to do a narrative in that fashion. Good idea Kholi and Thanks Stranden for posting the second video. I definitely like the look of the film convert one better. What hack was used if any?

Hey Stranden I just caught the second version. I like either uniquely, so that's pretty cool that there's two different sort of "looks" going on.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I used an early version of the Apocalypse Now hack by Driftwood.
