Invert Films Music Video - Distorted Penguins

Just thought that I'd share a recent DVX creation for critical and entertainment purposes; a music video to "Little Bit Closer" by the Distorted Penguins. By the way, their new album, "Billiam Rockwell", is absolutely amazing. I highly suggest checking it out. And without futher delay:

The Distorted Penguins: "Little Bit Closer"

The band had a LOT of imput on the video, so I didn't get to do all that I would have liked to, but all-in-all I beleive that it came out quite well for a first music video.

I also had a secondary camera operator, and some of the shots area little overexposed or a tiny bit shaky for this reason (some was me, I admit!), but it's a-okay for this time around. Just keep in mind that this was my first music video, ever, and my first large-scale project on the DVX.

Also, that I am 15. Yes, it seems young, but I like to let my work speak for itself.

Thanks for checking it out!

Josh

That was alright.

And I'm 16, so don't let your age hold you back - at all.

I'm not a music video man, but ironically, i turn my videos into pseudo-music videos (in that I like to leave a lot of sounds out of scenes, with just music overtoning the whole piece). I liked yours - ska isn't my type but I leave music preferences out of judging a film by a user. Good overall direction. And I hear you, I like to have almost complete input as well (as selfish as it sounds, we know we wanta majority of it).

Good stuff. Although it did seem to drag on at times, it was a nice way of turning an okay song into an interesting video!

not bad. Watch out for those crop bars... they change and aren't fully filling the bottom and top.

reminds me of the videos I made when I was your age. Of course it didn't look that good because I had a canon Zr60... and pinnacle express editing.. ah the days....

Good job on the video. I know the bassist, Nick. He showed me this video a few weeks ago. I remember talking to him about this idea several months back. I'm glad you got it off the ground. I think the video came off well based off what Nick originally told me.

Keep it up.

I liked it, but then I like Ska a lot, so that helped.

It felt like there were a lot of master shots, a few more close-ups would have helped.

Still, it was a lot of fun,

Chris

You told an entertaining, easily followed story with the camera - that's an accomplishment. It complimented the music and kept my attention throughout. Some closeups of the kid smiling or looking mischievious, etc...would send it over the top!

cool,

Prof.D.

That was great man, even though age doesnt matter, i'd like to say that considering your age that was a great music video. I love to see fellow younguns doing the same thing I do. (i'm 17) i'll be posting a couple of my videos here soon. I've shot videos on DVX's before butthat was when I rented them, but I just recently sold my GL2 and am about to buy either a 100 or a 100a so i'll post some of my stuff too. Speaking of which, did you shoot this on a 100 or 100a?

Thanks for all of the kind words on the video, fellas! It means a lot.

And RealityMS, I shot it on a 100a, 24pa mode.

Good work Josh they say never work with kids or animals but in your case it payed off. Good job the kid was funny suited the song perfectly.

That first shot of the train coming into focus and the sound of its whistle was perfect. The second shot, a slow push establishing shot also looked good. The fifth shot, a close-up on the kid, should have come more into focus before you cut I think.

The kid cutting the chain with the magically appearing cutters was funny. The way you transitioned with your zooms at this point was really nice. It's tough to create dynamic camera shots without the right equipment but you did it really well. Especially how you transitioned through the door. Speaking of transitions, the side wipe also worked well. The whole thing had a lot of cuts which is really important in keeping with the fast pace of the song. Well done.

I have to ask though... was the flower different in every shot on purpose? I can understand once or twice being a continuity mistake but it seemed like it changed considerably every time.

The close-up of the Billiam Dollar bill was a nice touch (throwback to the album title right?).

I don't quite follow the scene at 1:35 where the kid stops and gets something at the fruit stand... The shots following on the car-mount looked really smootha and nice. How did you do that? Do you have a car-mount or did you fake it somehow?

I think the kid getting the driver drunk and running over the jogger was funny especially since it didn't look realistic. On that note I'm wondering if the lack of realism with the dummy was exaggerated on purpose at all. Maybe to keep it light-hearted?

The look on the girl at the end was great and the boy performed well the entire time. I'm wondering if you intentionally chose scenes that relied very little on the boys acting ability. If so then good job.

Overall I thought it looked great. All the different scenes and locations, the fast cuts and zoom transitions. For the most part good camera angles, especially the low ones for the kid. It looks like a major pain in the ass to pull the whole thing off so major props for finishing it!

I LOVE this video!! the only recommendation that i would make that has been already mentioned would be to have a few more close ups of the kid. Other wise it was fun, entertaining, and totally fit the feel of the song. I laughed out loud at the car hitting the dummy that was awesome!!! I loved the shots of him on the tricycle, of him smashing the guy in the nuts, and the way the band was integrated into the video. Good job, looking forward to your next project!!

now i must go buy pringles, toodles
