I have been making exercise DVDs and corporate videos (output as DVD-5, or 9s) for years, using a JVC GY-500 standard def. DV camera, with a Canon broadcast wide zoom. Of course, 4:3, and tape based. I edit in FCP (originally FCP 2, then all versions to 4.5).
I have been away from this work for a couple of years (wrote a book, other things); now we are up to FCP 6.x, and everyone now want to work in 16:9.
So, I am upgrading my equipment. I have a Canon HV-30, to have something really portable, to test the HD > SD workflow, and for shooting YouTube clip in the gym location where a lot of my stuff is shot. But I will need a proper camera, and one with XLR connectors, etc., for my radio mics, and more control over the look.
All my output will be in three forms: 16:9 clips for YouTube, mp4s for iTunes download, and mpeg2 for DVD distribution. I intend to shoot in 720P, at 30fps (seems to be this will give the best compromise of quality vs. ease of workflow, and most easily scalable footage). None of my material will ever end up being broadcast, or as film.
The cameras I have narrowed my search to are the Panasonic HVX 200, or 200A. There are lots of these or sale on ebay, and elsewhere. I plan to use a Firestore 100 for the capture, rather than the P2 cards (as I see many here do, too).
Here are my questions: given the relatively low resolution of the intended output, are there any real practical differences between these cameras? The slightly wider wide end of the 200A would be a plus to me (mostly shoot interiors).
The other camera I was considering was the Sony HVR-V1, but for my intended output, I can't see any advantage compared to the Panasonics, and the Pannys have been around a lot longer---hence there are places like this for all the ins and outs.
Thanks in advance, kl
