Intro'd for NAB: The MixPre-3 and MixPre-6

I think the whole Pro vs dslr because of the lack of balanced outs is a tad misleading. If someone shoots on pro level cameras with xlr connectivity and runs a 2 ft unbalanced cable to their camera from the Mixpre3/6, do you anticipate there being interference issues? How often would someone need to do a long cable run from the outs?

I understand why it's not pro level for a dedicated audio recordist, but is it really going to be a problem for someone shooting pro level cameras who wants SD quality preamps/limiters/headphone, but doesn't want the 633 price tag?

Unbalanced operation is usually not a problem with line level. Manufacturers typically recommend to keep cable runs under ten feet, but in the real world with decent quality cables, much longer is possible. I've run 100' returns to PA systems and didn't hear anything significant. However if outputs are -10dB (like the F series Zooms) gong to a +4db input, that could cause a problem.

So the 3/6 are basically a PreMix-D less XLR output, plus fancier levels, usb feature, and inbuilt recorder?

Is the XLR output on the PreMix-D worth if for recording into cameras like the upcoming EVA-1 or existing C100/C300? Or does it make more sense to just use the PreMix-3 recorder internally and sync with the camera in post (or record to camera via 3.5 jack and then sync the higher quality recorded audio from unit in post)?

Can't decide which to spring for, if either (debating upgrading my JuicedLink RiggyMicro)

I've owned both and I can say without a doubt that it's a tough choice. :) I have to go with the new mix pre's though. the pre amps are soooo smooth and quiet. If you're feeding to camera and the mixpre is right on top of it there's no harm in running the 3.5 to camera. I've done it with great results. You can also record into the device at the same time so you have a backup if something goes funky and you need the bit depth. my 20 cents.

Plugging the MixPre D XLR directly into the cam (assuming it has line level XLRs) is quick, easy and sounds good, w/o the sync issues in post.

Does the MixPre3/6 have the ability to name individual tracks? What fine level control does it have over file naming & folder structure? Can notes be added to the metadata both before and after a recording?

Looks like the MixPre-6 has been lowered to $899.

Errr.... what do you mean, that was its launch price!

Yes, you can name individual tracks, add notes, edit filenames and have multiple project folders. Metadata can be edited before, during and after recording.

Hey guys! So it's been a few months since the Mixpres have been released, I was wondering how everyone who bought one or the other is feeling about them. I've been thinking about investing coming from a tascam dr-60d mkii, but thought I'd give it a few months to see if the kinks got ironed out. Thoughts?

I could probably give you a very non-scientific non-audiofile comment on it sometime next week. Will see if I can pick it up later today... My reference would only be towards the MixPre-D and the Zoom H6n.

I'm feeling sad but the mixpres are not the cause.

Really? Some places were selling them at 999.
