Intro'd for NAB: The MixPre-3 and MixPre-6

Just checked out the mixpre 3 and 6 at the Gotham Sound Expo. Analog pres and limiters - pretty cool for sub-$1000 recorders...

Wow, this thread has degenerated. Anyone want to discuss the new Mixpre?

Grant

May be some moderator can just remove the non-MixPre discussions to a separate thread (if an appropriate title or just miscellaneous).

Anyone physically tested the MixPre6/3 for extended periods?

I played with the units for a few minutes. Just went through the menus and such. Very solid build and intuitive. No trim knobs just gain...Shipping soon so someone will take it through the rigors soon...

Anyone got a shipping notification yet? I'm still waiting. Bh pre ordered. Called today and the extra battery plates are shipping but no word on the units themselves.

Thx Jim, word on the street BH, GOTHAM, LOCATION SOUND is they should be shipping next week. I called Danny at SD and he couldn't tell me any more info than that. It may have been smarter to order through a smaller company but we shall see. If I miss the first shipment it looks like June for second shipments.

Called SD yesterday and they said that the first two runs were claimed through pre-orders.

Then called BH and they wouldn't give much in the way of specifics regarding dates nor how many pre-orders, etc, but the guy did say that he has only been fielding inquiries about the 6, not the three 3, so perhaps that may make a difference for those seeking a 3.

Nice. I called bh and location sound today. I'm on both lists haha. bh said they're expecting theirs in early june and location sound said they're getting some on monday but don't know how many. The list at LS is 19 deep for the 6's and 16 deep for the 3's. I was surprised that so man 3's were ordered. Anyway I'm hoping that some people bail off the list so I can get one.

I'm surprised too, I just don't see the appeal in the MixPre3 when the MixPre6 only costs a little bit more.

I think there are a lot of OMB shooters who still use the small handheld recorder for audio (2 channel Tascams, zooms), and the under-the-camera recorders like the tascam 60d and 70d. For those people, stepping up to $650 is very different than $900, and they probably don't need the extra analog in and other features.

For those that are already using higher end recorders and want a new backup, or are at least using Zoom f4/f8, then yes, the Mixpre6 is a no-brainer. SD were very smart to offer both. I think they studied the market very carefully on this one.

Perhaps SD MixPre 3/6 and Zoom F4/F8 have never been aimed at the Pro market at all, the sale of these recorders / mixers will outsell 'Full Pro level' setups probably 100:1.
There are a LOT more sub pro users out there than pro users.
And as a maker of anything wouldn't you aim your product at maximum sales?.......

That's why half the planet owns an iPhone, and it's been four years since Apple gave us a new Mac Pro.

I have a question about the mixpre3's aux/mic in. Overviews say that the device records 5 channels, 3 ISO's and a 2 channel mixdown of the three inputs. How does the 1/8" aux/mic input factor into that? I know it can be used for TC input, but as an aux mic input, how is it being routed and controlled for the mix?

The overviews of the Mixpre6 are described where the aux input can be separately recorded as its own track, along with the four analog inputs and the 2 track mixdown for a total of eight tracks. . If that can't be done with the Mixpre3, then why is there an aux/mic input at all on that device?

I've been looking into this too (I have a Mixpre-3 on order). In addition to the timecode input, which you note, as the manual says (p. 19) 'Each of the MixPre-3’s channels can be sourced from an XLR mic/line input, 3.5mm Aux or PiP (Plug in Power) Mic input or from either of the two USB audio paths from a computer.' So, for, example, you could have a lav plugged into the 3.5mm aux/mic input and routed to one of the three channels, which sounds pretty useful for some. And, manual p. 20 '[select inputs menu option] Camera: Select this option when the Aux/Mic In is to be used for monitoring a video camera’s audio output via the MixPre-3’s headphones and C1/C2 meters located on meter view 3.' Again has some use. Then, manual p. 23, 'In the Outputs menu, you may send any channel, aux input, USB input or LR mix to either or both of the Stereo Outs.' This needs a bit more thought for its usefulness in relation to aux input routing. It could be argued that it would be nice if the aux/mic input could be recorded to iso tracks, other than channels 1-3, too: but then it would be called the Mixpre-5 and, arguably, would need the additional star button of the Mixpre-6, so there would be almost no distinction between the two models! Of course, the aux/mic input on both models lacks the Kashmir mic preamps.

Cheers,

Roland
