Intro Music/Sound Ideas & Thoughts

Setting up to do a music video within the next week or so, going over all the details with the director I am the DP - was trying to figure out exactly what music to play in the intro.

The main idea for the intro would be a fighting scene between the two main subjects in the video. The fighting scene itself would be any where between 10 to 15 seconds total - cutting back & forth between subjects and having some cut scenes from something else. What we want really is we want to set the mood & dont want specific music more like general mood music that could set the tone, going for a dramatic feel during the fight scene, with a static sound clipping each cut back and forth.

Thanks for any answers that come in.

Personally I would go with just SFX. Any music you use will contrast with the music of the video. If you have a total SFX bonanza intro and Then the music comes in that will have a lot of impact.

Hey guys,
I'm the director / editor of this project. I have never used sound effects for any of my projects since they have all been music videos. Any suggestions on what type of sounds effects would be good for a dramatic opening intro that involves the two subjects in a disagreement?

the fight scene will be cut from subject 1 to subject 2 a few times with a mix of "flash back" shots maybe - still debating on those parts

Just another thought-- along with the SFX, could you get the (music) producer to edit something down from the song itself? Some kind of loop that you could add the fight-scene sound effects to? That might be a good way to introduce the song, if the opening scene isn't too long to begin with.

I wish I could think of an example - but it could be cool to have some of the hits/punches SFX developed for the footage be used as percussion samples for the music (kick & snare, or just kick - bass drum - often being the percussive building blocks of a song). In which case, your fight sounds could evolve into a rhythm that the music builds over.

I would have a sound editor cut the fight. But after having started this tangent I'm wondering if we are misunderstanding what you meant by "fighting". I assumed a physical fight, blows and action. But I'm getting a feeling that this "fight" may be more of an argument. Either could possibly work but they are very different things. You could do a Foley extravaganza if it's just an argument. No words just the intensity of the way they are handling things, putting chairs down etc. If you really pump up those kinds of sounds so what you normally barely notice is now loud, it quite disturbing/ ominous to an audience.

Great idea!

yeah it's more of an argument between a couple...so maybe use sounds from their surroundings? I was thinking ambient noise from the building as well but I'm not sure what type of sounds would go well with this?

Think about the "world" the couple lives in and where this argument is taking place and that should dictate most of the sounds. Is it an apartment? Are neighbors watching Jerry Springer and it's bleeding through the walls? You can't use an actual show but you can create a show that sounds like it. Is there sports on the radio, or on a TV someplace? Is it urban with sirens? suburban barking dogs? warm weather cicadas? Instead of "hits" since this is more of an argument, folks can slam other things, or not and you just Foley it so we hear it way closer and louder than the picture is and give yourself the impacts that could transition into the song.
