GH2 INTRA GOP1 176M Hack = superb

Every editor knows that intra is primo. Why are we even debating intra vs long gop? seriously, i have in my possession 64GB p2 card worth 600+ compare that to a sandisk that hits 199 for the same storage that's a days worth of footage or half-day where you shoot your load go to lunch with crew, save the files, format and continue on to shot another 64GB. if this card is not for you and you don't care about intra frames then ok, but for me I would love to have and do have intra with forthcoming 64GB spanning, grading will be easier, editing shots and insertion effects will be better and overall i know each frame is what I saw.

Sure, if I shoot a scripted film (I work with improvisation a lot, where long takes are preferable) I will probably use a GOP1 hack. I'd like to see more narrative work done like this. Truth is though, I don't really expect anybody to notice or care.

i guess you can still make a film in HDV and it would be accepted by audience..
i don't know about festivals though. what's the minimum quality?

I think it depends on the festival - I've never had an issue with it, but mostly shot on film in the past.

It's true that HDV is probably good enough - horrible to us, but good enough for most people. I watch films online all the time - if I get too close to the screen its just pure macroblocking! What saves them is acting, script, sound, lighting, grading etc...

Also, I'm sorry - I know it's a bore when technical pixel peep threads are invaded by "be creative and professional - it's not about the codec you nerds" posts, but it's also an important recurring reminder when we collectively (including me) get too geek-boy pixel peepish, I think.

GOP1 = superb. True, maybe. I'd say GOP12 is pretty superb too is all I want to add.

Different hacks for different purposes. :)
And there it is folks. This is the quote of the day. 44Mb for interviews, concerts and anything that requires long takes etc. GOP1 for special effects and narrative work destined for larger screens etc.

but this just happens to be a technical discussion, not a creative one, theres plenty of those on dvxuser too, no ones discrediting creativity or the non technical aspects of filmmaking. theres nothing wrong with people discussing or getting all giddy over the hack, its exciting, were watching this camera evolve right before our eyes. i dont think anyone said the hack would increase their creative ability or raise their skill level, its just a FREE improvement over the cameras stock settings.

Thanks! Last noob question: So GOP2 and up are not Intra?

Only GOP1 is Intra. Intra means that compression is done within a single frame and that frame is self-reliant. GOP's 2 and up are compressed frames that rely on X number of other frames for its compression data.

Sorry im a bit of a noob but i was wondering what intra gop 1 is? Also is it a separate hack from apocalypse boom? And finally what is a matrix test? Sorry for being a noob lol

Intra GOP 1 is a characteristic of the way the data is recorded, not a specific hack itself. Some hacks are GOP1, others GOP3, etc...meaning, GOP1 is every frame is saved independently. GOP3 means every third frame is saved independently, and the others are simply derived from changes since the last keyframe. AFAIK

Not sure what apocalypse boom is. Sounds like the name of a flavor of the hack. Could be GOP1, might not be.

Can't help you on the matrix test.

I stopped paying attention when I got Driftwood's v9b and was very satisfied...but I understand it has evolved further.

What is the latest flavor of the Driftwood hack?

You're not the only one. I think i have V4b and left it at that. But definitely curious to know what updates have been made. it's one of those things where it would take an entire day to fish through the threads to get up to date. Maybe someone here who is keen and has been following can bring us up to speed?

I think the two benchmarks for me were 9b, and then Flowmotion.
Flowmotion of course has the new firmware (with HBR).

Flowmotion seems to be most people's favourites.

The latest out there is Driftwood's "Apocalypse Now 'Intravenus' v2 With cbrandin 'Smooth Cinema' Matrix".
I lot of people are loving it, saying it makes the noise look like grain.

To be honest I haven't tried any of Driftwood's new ones. The file sizes always seem to be to large for anything other than narrative work.

Nick's latest is called Low Rider, found here.

Just previous were Intravenus v2 and Cluster 'DREWnet' GOP12/15 (LongGOP), with the latter using some of the settings from the GH3 and applied to the GH2.

They're all still experimental though, so users beware.

The latest and greatest finished release is, in my view, Cluster v7 'Apocalypse Now' 12/15 GOP (DREWnet) with cbrandin '444 Soft Matrix' found below.

On the balance, for shots typical in narrative film I have found that -

Driftwood's AN Boom is unparalleled for 1080p. This is given the type of non-extreme detail shots that are 99.9% of what you see in a film.
Amazing because it unleashes the highest detail grid without respect to how fast the image is running through the available bitrate. More efficient firmwares will always bias bitrate use to the most perceptually salient areas of the image.

Granted you are not sending 1080i to an hdmi recorder, the best slowmotion (720p) is LPowell's FM2. The 720p hacking called for restraint and very clever perceptual bitrate use, and LPowell's hack is the very best with efficiency. In order to use both, I combined the two in a hybrid hack which I have been happily using for half a year (with the sacrifice of 1080i modes). I've settled. All hacks were a matter of compromise, and this was the best.

Holy skin tones batman.. That's fantastic. Even the gradation on her face. Smooth.

Sage, do you make your hack hybrid available somewhere for download? I remember how you were really big on the 720p 60 stuff and having that with the best 24H 1080p hack would be great.

Once I tried flowmoion2 I haven't bothered with anything else. Although Driftwoods hacks are really nice, I just don't see any improvement over what i'm currently using, well... as far as my eyes go that is.
